Letting your snake outside?

Ok I searched this and I couldn't find it. Is it ok to let your snake outside and let him or her explore? While watching it of course. I haven't done this ever so I was wondering how many people have done it or if it is even ok to do it. I always worry about my snakes wellbeing and happiness so that is the reason I am asking. If this has already been posted if you could please direct me to the thread I would appreciate it. :eats02:
 
I have always allowed my snakes to "explore" a little. You can usually get some good pics while outside. One thing to keep in mind is to not let the snake get too much direct sunlight. That can raise its temp very quickly and can be dangerous.
 
Hi There. Nothing wrong with letting them play outside now and then.
I think it gives them exercise and also relieves any stress that has built up.
My lot tend to burrow under grass etc., of course, don't expose them to too much direct sunlight for too long.

I take my snakes out but don't let them go. I take pics in trees, but someone always has a hand on it. Corn snakes are very fast and could be up the tree and out of reach in a heart beat. The other worry is predators we have hawks, owls, crows... all of whom would make the snake a tasty snack. I see at least on crow a week with a snake in its mouth. Just not a chance I would take. JMHO
 
I take mine out all the time. Let them climb trees, crawl in the grass, whatever. Watch for hawks. I've had a hawk try to take a pigeon in the grass two feet in front of me.

I have been wanting to do this with Alice but am so scared something will happen to her..
Maybe will try it with my hubby here tonight...Maybe not...I do let her out in the house though.....

I'm a proponant of a little outdoor exercise, but be aware of any possible pesticides or fertilizers on your grass or trees!
 
Mostly depends on the snake. You know what your snake is like indoors, and he'll act the same outdoors. Amel boy is OK, he doesn't mind being picked up, and doesn't try to run away, but will hide if given the chance. I had him out side - and he acted exactly the same. Had to take him out of the grass as he was trying to get to root level to hide.

Wouldn't risk putting my other boys on grass - too small. But' they've been outside, and don't seem stressed about it.
 
I'm not going to take the chance of my snake getting mites or some other parasites. Who knows whats in the grass and/or trees..

Don't be too cautious. I mean, what are the chances?
 
My snow and I go for walks all the time. Its very convenient because when ever he is outside he will go to the bathroom... I rarely have to clean his viv!
 
One thing I have noticed is that after I let my guy in the grass or outside in general he is VERY resistant to being picked up again. Hes usually very calm, but when I pick him up after being outside he flails all over and is very flighty. So I tend to not let mine outside much just to counter the mood swings. :p

I have let mine out in a tree but never on the ground. Needless to say i am with in arms length of her.

Well I've got to say I wouldn't really let a hatchling or very small snake out of hand outside, but my snake was older when I got her and is often very calm so I wasn't as paranoid :grin01:
 
These are some great pictures!

And I was wondering the same thing, so this would be a good new owner post. Once I get my first cornsnake, I think I'll just stick to trees and bushes assuming that it stays calm.
