Go Ahead, Make My Day!
Desdemona has become one of my favorites, so I was pretty concerned when she suddenly refused a meal this past spring. Upon inspection, I felt a nice little string of pearls. I knew they weren't fertile (she's never been with another snake since hatching), but since she was only 220 grams, I was very concerned none the less. She continued to refuse everything I offered over the next 6 weeks, but did absorb all those slugs she had produced. She lost about 30 grams, but has started eating again (she simply couldn't resist the live fuzzy mice). and is now back up 220 grams and eating rat pups. Unfortunately, due to the set-back, she won't be ready to breed in 2008 as I had originally planned.

Very pretty snake! Nice.

Gotta hate when that happens....had a amel motley het charcoal do that for me this year. Right around 200 something grams and decides to go through breeding mode. Then reabsorbed the follicles and just now putting on the weight. Like yours, she won't be ready until 09 now! Makes me wonder if I just should have bred her when she was showing signs....I know she was small but if she was going through the motions I wonder if she would have come out okay? :shrugs:

Hi Susan!

So glad you got your lovely girl sorted out! I have a big one (supposedly a male) who has been on and off his food for a while now. It's spring here now so I suppose he's just in the mood for other things but I really wish I could get him to eat! He won't take live, thawed, mice or rats of either preparation.

He's always been "quirky" though. Even since he was a little chap.

She's awesome. Sorry about the breeding mishap. I had one of mine do that to me, too. Right around 200g, also. She's starting to pack it back on. I'm hoping that she'll put enough on, and I'll just breed her late in '08 (around April or May). But I'll probably just end up waiting to be safe.

Thanks for all the nice comments! If she really packs on the weight over the winter, I'll try her in '08. It wouldn't be the first time I had success doing that.

Susan, I see no reason as to why that snake can't put on 80 grams in a few months before brumation. Shouldn't be a problem.
