Name that bedding

hi, i have just recently purchased a corn snake from a local pet shop. i would like to know if this bedding is ok for my snake as i am unsure.

the bag says " Coarse Dried Beechwood Chips, Speciality bedding for birds, reptiles,pigeons,mammals,snakes,tortoise,ect natural,hyginic,kiln dried,dust free organic colours using animal safe plant dyes"



any help would be very welcome.

o and hear is my new snake



he is around 12 inches long. any help on what the colourings are would be a big help to.

Aspen is the bedding you'd want to use on corns. I've heard recycled newspaper is great also. I've never read anywhere that beechwood chips are bad, but never heard of them being used on corns before.

Oh and your corn looks like a normal to me. But then again I'm not an expert. :crazy02:

IMO, the chips just don't look like they would be very comfortable for the snake. I would go with Aspen, it's much softer. Those chips look rough and uninviting.

Never heard of Beachwood being used, but as for the looks of it. There is nothing to suggest it would be harmful to your snake, but uncomfortable indeed if it decided it wanted to try burrowing. Aspen is much lighter and is easier for the snake to get under. Not to say this won't work, jut probably more comfortable to use aspen. I'm sure someone else on the forum uses this stuff or has in the past and will let you know soon what the pros and cons of the product are. Nice corn btw. Pretty normal.

I notice that most posters from the UK don't use Aspen. It must be hard to find there...

Its available in all good pet shops... and some bad ones..... lol

Hi StoreyBoy, yes the beech wood chips are absolutely fine to use for your new baby.

As said before if you can get hold of aspen bedding, corns seem to like it a whole lot more. I used to use beech wood chips myself a long time ago and the only "problem" I found was that when my corns did their "toilet", almost all of the wet/loose stuff went straight through the chips onto the bottom of the tank. So instead of quickly spot cleaning, I would have to move loads of substrate and wipe the bottom of the tank as well.

When I changed over to Aspen, not only do they love burrowing in it, but it is also a lot easier to spot clean the toilet out.

Actually aspen is incredibly easy to find here, at least in my experiences. There are two shops within a five mile radius of me that both sell it, and it can be ordered online. I've always used it without any problems at all.

To the OP - I doubt the bedding would harm your snake, but aspen is nicer for burrowing in. He's a Normal, as well.

I personally have never used this type of bedding myself but I swear by newspaper and aspen bedding.
