Feeding Change?

R.W.

Call me Richard
I have a female, at least I think "she" is ia female, corn somewhere between 3.5-4 feet long. "She" has been at this size for several years. I was wondering if instead of feeding her one mouse a week if I could give her two mice every two weeks, or maybe an adult mouse and a fuzzy every ten days?

Can I ask why you want to do that?

If you want her to keep a good weight and you think that one mouse a week is just to much for her and she will become over weight than feed one mouse every 2 weeks. Feeding two mice could cause problems, it's ok with smaller prey items but mice are larger and I don't think it would be to smart or do what it is you want.

Sorry, I need to rephrase my question.

One mouse a week doesn't seem to be enough for her as she seems to be HUNGRY for quite a while after eating just one, she constantly moves around the tub looking for more and strikes at anything that moves, not an aggresive defensive strike, no tail vibrating or raising up, but a feeding response bite.

But I was also worried that two mice a week might be TOO much for her, so I was wondering if it would be better to give them to her every 14 days instead of 7, or if I should give her a adult and pinky/fuzzy every 10.

Or should I just give the adult-fuzzy combo every week?
I tried giving her two mice once and she calmed down ALOT faster and seemed more content, but, then again, I worried that two a week consistantly might be too much. :shrugs:

If she's several years old and 3.5-4 feet, maybe she's reached her adult size. Therefore, you won't necessarily expect her to get bigger.

As far as feeding goes, I don't see 2 mice every 14 days as being an answer. Maybe I'm wrong. You may curb that initial prowl right after she eats, but in the end 2 mice/14 days is the same absolute amount of food as 1/7 days. Plus, if she only eats every 14 days, she might be quite grumpy/hungry by the time that 14th days rolls around especially if she's used to being fed every 7 days. I would try to find her larger mice as long as you are staying within the general 1.5x the widest part of her body rule and continue to feed every 7-10 days.

What's the snake's weight and what is the weight of the mice?
I've bought "large adult mice" that were all of 18g. They should be more like 25-30g. You could also get 35-40g mice sometimes called "jumbo" which might be a nice jump in size for her, especially if she's been getting "adult mice" on the smaller end of the size range.

If you have a lot of the current mice and they are below 20g, feeding her 2 at each feeding probably wouldn't hurt.

+1

Weigh your snake, weigh your mice:

The Munson Plan:

-Single pinks (2-3g) every 4-5 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 4-5 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (24-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+)
-Jumbo Adults (40-50g) every 7-x days (Snake = 400g+)
