Hey Guys,
I am saving my money, so I can make my tanks look as natural as possible. Right now I have repi carpet and drift wood with rocks, I saw someone say about plants, theres probably a specific type of plant to use?

Should I keep using the repti carpet or should I invest in plants, aspen bedding etc.

I'm figuring the plants would need to be replaced after feeling the wrath of snakey bodies :-D

Also, if someone can write a list of stuff that I can get this weekend, as I have nothing to do, I would like to make everyones tanks as comfortable as possible, new stuff to explore etc.

Thanks!

Hi, the best kind of plants are fake plants, you can get them at pet shop or go to the dollar store (which is what I do). Real plants are not advised. Your snake would probably like aspen better then the repti carpet as they like to burrow in the aspen. Drift wood, rocks, fake plants, hides, water dish, thats about it good luck, susang

Ok, that sounds good, I didnt know about the dollar store, I will definatly check them out!

Thanks

Ok, so bromeliads are probably the better potted live plants to put in my viv? If thats the case, could I buy them at my local plant/lawn n garden shop? Just making sure they havent been treated etc.

Although artifical sounds better and less pricer, my snakes like to spill their water, they bowels are spill/tip proof, so dont ask my how they get large amounts of water out onto the carpet/bedding. So I was sorta looking for something to drink up the spilt water. And I'm going to switch everyone back to aspen, since I had them all on repti carpet, they seem to miss the burrowing. haha.

So there getting it back this weekend.

I also used to use repticarpet and then switched to aspen, its easier to maintain and Jake loves to burrow. Actually real plants are much cheaper than fake plants IMO - I use a mixture of both, I have 3 real plants and 4 fake plants in my vivarium. Real plants help improve the humidity.

Some of the problems with live plants are watering, wet dirt, preventing your snake from getting in the dirt. Unless the dirt is sterile there will be microbs and bugs which could harm your snake. I know the argument will come that says they live in the wild with real plants, but many more die in the wild then in captivity. Fake plants can be washed, since I get them at the dollar store I can throw them away if they get dirty. There is at least one person with a natural habitat on this forum but it took a long time (few months) planing and getting the viv to the point to put the snake in, sorry can't remember who did it. just my opinion, susang

I agree, my Royal poo's in the same spot every time... Right on top of her fake plant, I would be tempted to move it over to the other side but that would be on her real wood log, and that would be a lot harder to clean than the Exo-Terra cave that the plant is near lol. Now if this were a real plant, it'd be a lot harder to deal with. I know you could just throw it away but it's better to use fake plants.

Oh and if you're having problems with humidity you could always put some dampened sphagnum moss in there, however be careful and watch out for mildew etc.

Hope that helps and the very best of luck to you!

P.S. - I'm very jealous of your menagarie! I'd love to have just one Beardie, and you have four!
