moving to a new tank previous housed by a turtle.

Sadly our turtle has passed away.

Though now our corn snake, Max Power, can have a larger home. Currently he is 5 years old and has had the same 20 gallon tank.

The turtle had a 36 gallon tank and we are thinking of transporting him to there. The question we have is how to we clean/disinfect the turtle tank. The FAQs on this site say to use 1-2 capfuls of bleach per gallon of water we use to clean. Or use that disinfectant that starts with an N.
Is there any amount of dry time or amount of rinse times we should clean this with?
Really what is the safest way to clean this tank and ready if for Max with the least risk to him.

Once that tank is clean should we use his old substrate? It is a red sand, is it okay to add more to the existing substrate? Is it okay to switch it out entirely and if so what type do you recommend?

Personally, I'd do the cleaning in a few steps, but I'm normally paranoid. First, wash it out with a mild cleanser (like dish soap). After that's rinsed out well, I'd use the bleach solution then set it out in the sunshine to dry. UV and warmth will dissapate the chlorine. But, being me, I'd then rince thoroughly with clean water until I can't detect any bleach smell. Then give it a couple days to fully gas out. Did I mention I'm paranoid?

As for the substrate, I'd switch him from the sand. I prefer aspen.

I'd take it outside, scrub with the bleach solution, let dry in the sun. And buy a new snake for the 20L!

Personally, id give it a good scrub with warm soapy water, use some reptile safe disinfectant (available at most pet shops), then give it a good thorough rinse out and allow it to dry. I have to agree with Nanci though on getting a new snake for the 20! :)

I've just housed my new cornsnake in my old fish tank. I washed it out with a thin bleach solution, gave it a good scrubbing then wrinsed it out with water until there was no trace of bleach left then i gave it a good scrub with a standard anti-bacterial spray - then rinsed this out WELL to get rid of all the chemicals. Let it dry for a few hours, Then gave it a quick whipe with a wet towel to get rid of any smears.

Seems to of done the job for me, the tank is as clean as when i got it.

I would advise you to have some anti-smear glass/surface cleaner with you to finish as some bleach's do leave some quite noticable marks!. :)
