Heat escaping through lid?

My snake has a new fish tank to live in but the lid has slits all the way across the surface of it, as i dont have a thermometer does anyone know if any heat will be lost through this lid? Will it be warm enough in there?

You should buy a digital thermometer they are not expensive, its the only way to tell if the temps are correct.

Heat rises. Slits in lid. ???? Of course heat will be lost. How much?? Too much?? Warm enough??

Buy a thermometer. Or you could guess. I’ll guess warm enough.

is that too blunt?

Certainly heat is lost through the lid. I have screen tops and I loose heat, but I have a thermometer that lets me know the temp at the bottom (over the UTH) and at the top. I usually keep the house fairly warm so it is not a problem for me.

My apartment is usually fairly cold and I have never had a problem with it. I just keep the uth running at the proper temp and go from there.

Get a thermometer now. There is now way to safely house snakes without something that will give you temp readings. How are you regulating the heat to ensure it doesn't get too hot? or too cold? You want ventilation so there is proper airflow. heat loss in the top shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Once you get the thermometer set up check it out, if you still feel like too much heat is being lost try putting aluminum foil on one side of the cage screen.

Or you can put up 1/2 inch to 1 inch styrofoam

1/4" foam core works wonders...

thats a great pic.. what type of lid is that? specifically how do you have your cords running up and out of your viv without creating a gap by going 'under' the lid?

Ideally i need a lid that had an adjustable solid / screen slide to regulate humidity and heat..anyone know of one?

thanks

Looks to me like hes drilled a hole just big enough for the wire through the plastic 'rim'?

Could be wrong though!. Nice setup. :)

That actually is an All-Glass Aquarium Critter-Cage. They have punch-outs that allow you to run cords out the top.

I have since moved her to a slightly larger enclosure, a 30-gallon breeder which gives her and additional 72 square inches of floor space. However, the setup is almost identical though I did have to cut the plastic "ring" at the top of the enclosure to accommodate the wires.

If interested, I'll try to get pictures of her new enclosure this weekend.

Steve
