Swollen, dark spot

ReptileMama4

Snakey Mama
I just got my little Aden a couple weeks ago. I tried feeding him last week and again yesterday. He didn't eat in either try.

A few days ago when I was handling him, I thought I noticed a swollen area on the right side of his lower jaw:uhoh:. When I looked closer I didn't see anything.

Now today I saw that same swelling again. This time there's a dark spot under his chin on the same side.:eek1:

I'm holding him as I type this. He started shedding a couple days ago, and he's still shedding. In fact, I had to take a break from typing to help him get all his skin off. I'm so proud of my boy:crazy02:.

Here's a couple pics. Hope they're clear enough. They were taken with my camera phone.

I appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

Can't see it clearly, but it really doesn't sound good that the shed is taking so long. Put him in a deli cup with damp kitchen roll or in a lunch box with a wet washcloth and the rest of the shed should come off.
The swollen jaw could be an injury, and/or mouthrot. Can you get a clearer picture or get him to a vet?

yeah that doesn't look to good. I would go to the vet. If it is something that can be cured with antibiotics then the sooner the better. Good luck.

He actually shed in my hands as I was typing that post. It didn't come off in one piece, so I wet my hands, and he got it all off.

I moved his water to the warm side so hopefully with his next shed, he'll have more humidity in his viv.

I've a gut feeling the swelling might be an injury, but I have a friend who's a vet. We go to the same church. So what I could do is just bring Aden to church with me, then show my friend and see what he says.

Thank you both for your input. My boy is active, and he loves to be with his mommy.:dancer:

Personally, I'd hold off on handling until the injury has been assessed and treated, then only put in feeding container and back to viv until a good feeding habit is established.

No worries. I know eveyone has their own opinion on handling, it's just my personal take on it that the little 'uns can get stressed so I prioritise feeding until they are feeding well.

LOL I love the fact you are going to bring a snake to church. Lets just hope it doesn't end up like Ray Stevens The Mississippi Squirrel Revival (If you haven't seen the video you must).

Corns should not have a dark spot in that area, it's definitely unusual. Let us know what your Vet says. If he's recently fallen or somehow injured his chin, it might be a hemotoma (blood from an injury pooling under the skin).

It's actually not my corn. It's my rubber boa. Anyway, I didn't take him to church, cuz I actually didn't go myself. My stomach was really gurgly the night before, so I didn't wanna chance it:uhoh:.

So I went ahead and checked him, and his spot is still there. I'm thinking it's kinda fading, but I'm still leaving him be. I'm gonna check him again Wednesday when I try and feed him. He's not acting like he's in pain or nothing. He seems really happy to see me.

But yeah, thanks for checking in, and I'll let y'all know what's going on with Aden.

Until then, merry Christmas. :dancer:

Ok, so yesterday morning (Sunday), I went to get little Aden outta his cage. I checked his jaw, and the swelling was totally gone :dancer:. The bruise was almost gone as well. Woo-hoo!! :dancer:

But I went ahead and took him to church anyway. ;)

My veterinarian friend and his family (wife and 5 kids) all got to meet little Aden. And yeah, they all fell in love. The kids ended up showing their friends and begging their mom if they can get one like mine (along with the ball python they have now). Aden got a lot of love yesterday. He's a popular guy.

So my friend advised me to put an overhead incandescent light deal over his tank along with the UTH that's already there. I s'pose I can use the one my turtle was using before he upgraded. Gotta love the hand-me-downs :dancer:.
