Pine vss Aspen bedding for feeder Rodents...

DragonBoy

Crazy Cornsnake Breeder
I know there was much discussion around using Aspen with our snakes, but for the sake of keeping costs down I began using Pine with my breeding tubs of Rats and Hamsters. No one seemed to appear to mind but then today in one tub I found the residents with scabby nose tips. Have not noticed any excessive sneezing but apparently something has their noses all inflamed/irritated. They do not appear sick, are reproducing normally and eating fine.
I would appreciate any thoughts from those of you more experienced in the art of breeding feeder rodents.
Thanks
Scott

Pine has phenols in it that cause respiratory distress in small animals.
I know these are only feeders, but the fumes are not good for them, and probably not good for the reptiles either if they are in the same room.
