Petsmart stores... getting dumber?

I went to a Petsmart yesterday that USUALLY has it's ducks in a row with regards to animal care. Yesterday I find that they are housing multiple kingsnake hatchlings in the same tank. In addition, they had a mouse in with gerbils twice its size. I thought maybe the mouse had squeezed into the tank by accident, so I asked. The guys was totally unconcerned. :bang:

I have a mouse in with one of my rat colonies, mouse Mommy wasn't taking care of it so I put it in with rat Mommy. It's been there for at least weeks, no problems yet. I have watched closely, as I wouldn't want the rats to hurt it and now that its weaned I don't have a mouse colony it can go in without trouble. susang

Yeah... but rats are generally nice. Gerbils are evil little creatures.

And Lauren... to answer your question: Yes.

Should also add that I worked at PETsMART as a teenager. Unlike most of the people at the PETsMART I worked at, I actually knew more about the things we sold than just what the "PETsMART training test" teaches you. I was the one taking copies of the magazines we sold to the back on my lunch break, devouring every word. Unfortunately, I don't think the staff at this particular PETsMART do that....

I work at Petsmart

I'm sorry if you are offended I would be, but maybe tha's just me.
I think all pet shops have some downfall in how they take care of pets. I also know Petco and Petsmart have cares sheets. I've been told the employees have to give this info whether they agree with it or not.

i agree with susang. sorry if i offended you, you seem to be a great expert on snakes but i cant imagine housing two king snakes together. sounds like that store needs some tips from you. :)

I'm not really that offended, no matter where you go you will probably find someone who is really bad at their job. Our petsmart is fairly new, so a few of us had lots of training before we opened. I would think the main thing that would affect the quality of the store would be the managers...

I think it totally depends on the store. I knew somone that managed a Petsmart in downtown Mesa before I moved out here. He was actually pretty reptile-savvy. That was a few years ago though, and in a totally different area of town. Most of the time, you just aren't that lucky.

About 6 months ago, they built one a few miles away from me, and I troll there for furry supplies, and end up making my way to the reptile section pretty much every time. The people there know me pretty well to know that I know a tad about reptiles, and I've actually been asked to give husbandry advice to a few customers/new reptile owners... apparantly not very many "proffesionals" know that it is NOT ok to use pine, and it is not ok to keep a Kenyan in something other than, oh... sand? (come on people... Kenyan Sand Boa) :headbang:

They had a big sale on their corns, and since I was already there buying fish tank supples, I decided to look. There were about 12 corns in the cage. A few looked decent, but some were very emaciated. They had thrown a handful of pinkies in the cage and left the poor little ones to fend for themselves. Of course, the aggressive feeders got to them 1st... which is why they were much bigger and more established. I even spied on one of them scarfing on a new regurge.

Plus there was the kingsnake hatchling issue stated above... :nope:

Unfotunately, I think they just don't screen very well in most case. Most managers just aren't knowledgable about reptiles enough to know when those they hire are not as well. Maybe they'll up the bars soon. In rare cases, you can find somone that actually knows what they are talking about.

Its nice to see that there are a few employees on sites like this, or fauna, or even (shudder) kingsnake. At least they will be somewhat exposed to some knowledge, and have advice/experience at their disposal.

I agree 100%. When our store was at its best, we had a manager who looked out for the live animals, first and foremost. But the higher ups were not pleased with her overall rate of sale (she encouraged us to turn away people who were unfit) and she was fired and replaced with someone who encouraged us to make the sale, regardless. Oh, and don't waste time cleaning too much... and put as many together as possible so we can display more... etc, etc. And that is when the store went down hill and I quit because I could not handle it.

I, too, am glad to see pet store employees hanging around places like this.

My store manager bred snakes and ran MARS and the Northern Va Reptile Shows not too long ago. Of course, our store doesn't sell snakes...but we should be getting some in the next month. Too bad I won't be there, but I feel like I have educated my fellow employees on teh subject lol.

Today I read in the Petsmart procedure book and they actually have very good instructions on feeding snakes. (It also says never to house Kings or Milks together) And only 4 corns are supposed to be in a cage at once, 3 too many for most of us, but a lot less than 12. I guess this again reinforces the fact that it is the employees who are most likely to be at fault.

This kinda redeems Petsmart in my book. I'd actually be really interested in reading the procedures. I'd completely agree - The policies can exist, but if the employees don't give a rat butt...
