how often do you change substrate?

tradernick

Just another Florida guy
I started using cedar but don't know if I need to change it out....and if so, how often? Mouser loves to burrow in it :)
Thanks,
Nick

You NEED to get rid of cedar immediatley. The oils in it are toxic to corns.

Switch to newspaper or kitchen roll temporarily until you can find a supply of aspen or beech chips etc.

When using wood substrate, I just spot clean the poop when it's there. When I use newspaper or kitchen roll, I just toss the sheet and put down a new one everytime theres poop.

I'm sorry...it's ASPEN, not cedar. Yes I've read the forums and realize that CEDAR is deadly...I just had my wires crossed there. I'm using ASPEN and don't know how often to change it. It's been in the viv for a few weeks now but still smells fresh and I keep the poop cleaned out of course.

I use newspaper and i change it once a week unless someone decides they'd like to use he fresh paper 2 minutes after i've put it in.

I use aspen and do a full clean every two months or so. I spot clean poop every week. Even when I clean it every two months, I feel as if I am tossing out clean bedding. So it lasts a while.

ok thanks. ratsncorns. I started to replace the aspen yesterday but it still seems so new and fresh that I decided to ask here before changing it. I guess this big bag I bought will last a long time lol...great news.

I tend to stall on completely removing substrate and bleaching everything, but I think as long as you remove the feces and urates whenever found, the substrate can be changed every month or so without problems. As mentioned before, I also use this time to completely wash and bleach everything, including hides, etc. Hides that aren't washable (such as paper towel rolls) are thrown out and replaced at this time, as well.

I use aspen aswell, I spot clean it whenever I can, at least once every 6 days (which is feed day). I do a total change every 4-6 weeks where I disinfect everything in there.

We are using tropical terrarium substrate (coconut husk). The store that we got our snake from didn't have anything else in stock. Is this a suitable substrate for him?
