So, i went with a friend of mine to get her a snake - she then decides to tell me

Taxidermy

everything under the sun.
that she previously owned three ball pythons, which she let starve to death. Basically. She found her story humorous that she didn't have the time to care for her snakes. Now, she just recently picked up a king - i cant help but think this snake wont even last a couple of months.

What do you think i should do?

I mean, I dont want this animal to die - she didnt even give her ball pythons WATER. You know right there, that she doesnt have the right responsibility to care for this snake.

I don't want to come off to her as a nag; but how could i convince her to take it back, or possibly sell it/give it to someone who will properly take care of it?

Tell her because of how she kept her snakes in the past she is unable to take care of the King. Don't just sit there and do nothing, be mean and tell her how it is. Or-- make sure to check up on the snake to make sure he is doing ok.

Wow. I just don't know what to say here. Will Animal Control in your area deal with snakes if she decides not to care for these? Is there some way you can check on the snake?

The fact that she sees nothing wrong with letting an animal starve and dehydrate to death really disturbs me....alot.

You have to tell her that unless she takes care of this snake properly you can no longer be friends with her. Animal neglect isn't funny. If you don't speak your mind and protect that snake, you will never have peace of mind. Check up on it and if it appears neglected- take it away!

I think if I found any friend of mine had thought a story like that funny, whatever type of animal was involved, I'd have to speak my mind. In fact I'd probably go nuclear and lose the friendship, without any regrets

Well, i'm going to be headed over there today.

She takes great care of her cats, i just dont see why she didn't care for her pythons.

I agree, I couldnt believe she found humor in that situation. It's cruel. Another friend of mine told her that she wasn't going to care for it, and that if she couldn't; he would. The thing is, she doesn't want to give it up from what i can see. She spent 80 dollars on it, and even her mom wasn't pleased that she spent that much money on 'something that was just going to die'.

I will tell her today that she needs to be serious about her new pet. That she needs to change the water every day and mark on a calender by the cage or in her room when he needs to be fed.

If not, I dont see how i can just take the animal away from her. I suppose if the situation gets bad I could call some sort of animal control/help to look into it.

Thanks everyone.

I'd have to agree with the rest of the posters. It always disturbs me when I see animals suffer because of action of humans, and pets dying because of inaction is NEVER funny. I mean what could have possibly been the reasoning behind not feeding and watering the poor things... I don't get it. If you can't tell I'm of the don't get a pet unless you can take care of it and give it a good home variety of people. Pets are a little life...a living breathing thing and you somehow need to get that through to your friend.

On the other hand. If all they way is something to look at set up a nice Viv and get a plastic snake. No mess, no feeding and such and nowadays you can find some pretty real looking plastic snakes.

Same thing happened to me.
Except it was two iguanas.

The guys said "Two months later they where all dried up like a stick, haha"

He also said he had a ball python with"bugs" on it.

): It's cruel.

Ha. If she really isn't serious about her new pet.

I may just have to steal him when she's not paying attention.

I know my cousin would love a new snake seeing as he was scared of the ball python I took in for him. I guess she was too aggressive for him. This king is absolutely sweet too.

You can tell her mother she's starving it to death, if it comes to that. Maybe you should talk it over with her mother ahead of time- a snake is a 20-year commitment, not a throw-away pet, and if you learn that your friend is not taking care of the snake properly, you would like the mother's support in taking possession of it.

Totally, that sounds like a really good idea.

I know her mother already believes that he's going to die; and she knows i already own five snakes.

So, with a bit of convincing and a small price. Perhaps, I could get it off of her.

I would feel bad if i didnt throw down a bit of money, but if the mother is willing to hand it over for free. Why not.

Her mom seems reasonable.

Yeah I like that idea too. Someone like that shouldn't be allowed to even come near a pet. If you can't get the snake from her and things start looking bad I would take a picture of the bad conditions and show it to the animal rescue groups in your area. Good luck.

wow, reading this makes my stomach churn. It is a good thing you are watching out for that snake! all the advise here is very good.....ah, but that friend of yours makes me want to hurl.

:dancer: Word.

I'll be on the look out, most definately.

Again, if i have to steal it to save it. Haha. I will.

She'll probably just think it got our, or one of the cats got a hold of it.

No harm done, it will be safe with me ;D

I don't think I could be friends with someone like that..A life is a life...whether it be dog, cat, snake or fish...a pet should always be well looked after and fed and given water...starvation or dehydration is a horrible way for an animal to die..I could never imagine doing that to my pets...I'm glad there are people like us out in the world that know pets deserve a good loving home.. :0) I hope all goes well for the little snake..good luck :)
