Hi all. i just recently got my corn and i was wondering about heating

i have a 12" x 12" x 18" Exo-terra tank. right now it has bark in it as a substrate but i will be going over to aspen shavings soon.

i have a cold apartment. i cant get it to stay at a decent temp. it an old house in toronto with shoddy old single pane glass windows. im currently working on sealing the whole place.

right now i have a lamp set up and its keeping a good potion of the tank around 82. im afraid to take the lamp off at night because it gets bitterly cold and i dont want my poor Cornelius to freeze to death.

whats the best way to regulate the temp?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's lots of information here on the site you can search for and find detailed information, but the Reader's Digest version is:
* Get an Under Tank Heater (UTH) which is a pad that sticks to the (outside) bottom of the tank.
* UTHs can get TOO hot, so you need to regulate it. A thermostat is the better option, but you can also use a rheostat (glorified dimmer switch). Multiple brands and types are out there for your research.
* You won't know if your UTH is set right if you don't have an accurate means of measuring the temperature they produce. A DIGITAL thermoter with a PROBE is essential. Remember, your corn wil most likely burrow down to the bottom of the tank. Knowing what the air temperature is in the middle of the tank is not nearly as useful as knowing what the temp is at the glass where the snake actually is.
* Multiple hides in different places give the snake the chance to find the "just right" place for their comfort.

Hi and Welcome, Ditto with Bruce, I would just add the 12x12x18 is not a good saize for a cornsnake, they don't need the heigth. Cornsnakes by nature are not arboreal and would rather tunnel and burrow in the substrate. Also if it is one with the doors on the front, watch your baby as they can aqueeze out that openig. For now you could use a 10 gal tnak but ultimatley you will need 20L. susang

oh yes. i am well aware that the tank is small but he is only 4 mths and i just got him. i have full intentions on getting a 20 gal in about a month (cash is tight. bloody x-mas)
