UTH Help

My viv is: 83cmX35cmX40Cm, I bought the zoo med made for 30-40' gal, the glass is pretty hot but the temp is not rising, I just connected the uth like 20 minutes ago, how much I have to wait so the temp rises, I bought the correct uth?

I'm confused what you mean when you say that the glass is hot but the temp isn't rising. If the glass is hot, I don't think you want the temperature to rise. What temperature are you reading and do you have the probe directly above the glass? Also, are you using a rheostat/thermostat?

it's not touching the glass, just touching the aspen bed... I mean that the glass is hot but the ambient temp is not... the ambient temp has to be hot too right? I'm using a rheostat,
the ambient temperature is 69 °F and the bottom glass is 96... so I just have to worry for the bottom glass temp? and not of the ambient?

yeah I know, I'm not regulating the temp because I wanted to see how much it could get, now it's 100 °F, but the ambient temp has to be high too right?

They hang out on the bottom anyway, not 5-6 inches off the air, as long as the floor is warm and the ambient is in at least the mid 60's they'll be fine.

really? wow that's great! I thought the ambient had to be high to... Ok so I have to check the bottom glass temp? 100 too high? 85 ok?

True, but a good upper range is 82-85 so the aspen doesn't have to get to 85. The point is that your snake is capable of laying directly on the glass, so you don't want it to be hotter than what is safe. Plus, your temps will vary slightly using a rheostat anyways.

yeah and I'm scared that it drops a lot on night =S, hmmm.... the uth has to be big enough to cover the whole half? or just the center because it doesn't cover the whole half =S

I'm starting to worry, because the basking zone it's not big.... it doesn't cover the hlaf tank size.... the uth has to cover all the half of the viv?

The standard is that the UTH covers 1/3 of the floor, one side or the other, so as to create a temperature gradient. But whether its 1/3 or 1/2, as long as you have the appropriate temps on either end of the gradient and your snake can get his body into either extreme, you and your snake will be in good shape.

Go ahead and move it, whichever side you prefer. May lose some stickiness, but it'll still work. You might need some good tape like that wide clear boxing tape to help hold it under your tank. Thats what I've done with mine.

darn... the problem is that I pasted it the side I want but the edge of the uth doesn't touch the edge of the tank... it's like in the middle of one side but it lives like 2" of cold area... should be a problem?

Sorry for all those questions I just really thought the temp had to be higher.... and the cold side is 64 so i was like

hey well at least you're asking all these questions, as opposed to roasting your snake! it sounds like you've got a lot of good advice, i'm sure you'll be fine once you get all the temps sorted out.
