Oh cage clips, why must you be so loud. You make the most terrible noise that must be even worse inside the cage. The vibrations must suck.

Valentine definitely freaks a little bit when I latch his cage top, and immediately burrows in to his substrate and disappears.

The cage clips are not only snake-proof but they're pretty much human-proof as well. I've pinched myself trying to get them off, and now have taken to pushing down on the clip with my head, while i use both hands to pull the bottom down and away.

Does anyone know any alternatives? I know not to use weights and he's in a glass terrarium.

I was using a pair of those clips on my ATB's viv and had the same problem--unfortunately the noise made my ATB even more pissed than his usual cheery ATB attitude. Anyways, I switched to this type (I actually got them in a deal, when I received an RO with its entire setup) but I found them online here to show you: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/1233/product.web

They seem to fit any type screen top that the other clips fit, and use sort of a spring-type pressure to secure. They don't make any noise--you just kind of pull down to detach from the rim to get them top off. Two--one each end is probably fine, four--one on each side may give you better peace-of-mind though.
 
I hated the clamps. It made me not want to get my snakes out because I hated them so much. So, I went out and bought locking kritter keepers for all my snakes. I love them. So easy to get in and out of. And no escapees!:)
 
They are definitely keeping me from replacing the water more than I absolutely have to. It just makes SO much noise and is SO hard.
 
Check into the locking kritter keepers. It shouldn't be too expensive. I had to buy eight of them. But they are so worth it. Or, you could buy the plastic tubs. (like in a rack set up). Some people swear by them. And they are way cheaper. I might go to a rack set up in the future.:spinner:
 
I use the clips for many tanks, both rodent and snake. I have a technical way that will help take some of the large clacking away and also make it so you don't have to break a finger to get into the tank.

1) take clip in both hands
2) bend slightly
3) refit onto tank
4) repeat if needed or bend opposite way if step 2 was overdone. :)
 
You can use silicone sealer to "glue" on a hasp - the long side to the glass, and little "eye" piece to the lid. Then you can even lock it if needed. Or you can glue a couple of pieces of velcro on each end.
 
I use 6 foot long tie down straps with clip connectors that go underneath the viv and over the top. Maybe not the prettiest solution, but the guy who gave me the tank gave me those too and they work pretty well.
