helix thermostat

so i built my first rack over the weekend. I was bored and i had some extra money and my collection keeps growing. I used 1/2" mdf board, pegboard, wood screws, satin black rustoleum paint, and wood glue. (ps i would highly recommend using 3/4" mdf board rather than the 1/2" when building a rack.) I will try and post pictures later today. The question now is what thermostat to go with. I'm sure in the future i will need to build another rack and i was wondering if it just made sense to go with the more expensive helix thermostat ($130) or a cheaper model (zoo med or big apple deluxe). I like how the helix regulates the temperature and i just feel it would be better in the long wrong. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I use Helix thermostats for all of my heat tape type applications. It will keep the world at a more uniform constant temperature than the zoo med. I have heard the Big Apple proportional is good but I have not used one. They all have a maximum wattage rating and if I remember correctly the Big Apple is somewhat less than Helix.

Are Fords better than Chevy? I really like the Helix. I have one that is maybe 30 years old and has never missed a beat. That means a lot to me.

If you don't mind the cost, a proportional of course would be better. I prefer Herpstat over helix, I use the Herpstat ND to run 2 AP Economy racks. I have no experience with Helix but they're more expensive and I have read a few negative reports on them.

A Ranco or Johnson Controls would be a good choice as well, around $75 and more reliable and accurate than the cheap ones, but still on/off type.

thanks for the replies. I'll look into herpstat; i haven't checked them out yet. Either way i'm pretty sure i'm going with the more exspensive ones, the on/off models just don't appeal to me
