Wet hides

I was just wondering what would be the best method of creating a wet hide?Simon is very deep in blue, would now be the time to do it or do you wait 'till the eyes clear just before shedding?

Most people put the wed hides in as soon as they see the animal turning blue, that way they have the advantage of upping the humidity the entire time the snake is trying to loosen that old layer of skin.
All you really need is a tupperware like container to fit the size of the snake, cut a hole out big enough. Then line it with damp moss or damp paper towels. Make sure you wring them out first.

Thanks, sounds easy enough!LOL. Warm or cool hide, or just where he spends all his time (cool hide)...Should I mist him at all?

Well putting it closer to the warm side will raise the humidity.

I personally just mist my snakes once a day when they're in blue because I don't want to deal with the hide.

Thanks Jenn, I think i'll try misting this time.next shed i'll try the wet hide!:)

Can you please let us know if there is a difference? We have always misted Cheerio before her shed. Lately I've been thinking a moist hide would be better, but what if my snake doesn't use the hide?

Yeah, Simon doesn't use his warm hide alot so I just misted him under his cool hide. Next time I'll try the moist hide for sure!

My snake prefers the colder side, too. She hides in the warm to digest but that's about it. I would have to try it in the warm/middle first.

Here is where I put mine & my guys right into it & have beautiful sheds now. I love it! So do they!

I am not sure either but misted and she seems to like a damp corner of the cold aspen pretty much all the time?? She sheded last night and all looks great, came of in two large sections on damp paper towel I put on top of warm side hide (really rough wood hide)??
Hey alan :)

damp peat moss works great for me. I have just put a pile of it on top of a paper plate and my snake will hang out underneath it or on top of it. I should probably try the tupperware thing so I don't have to re-wet the peat every night.

Hey alan :)

Just to keep you advised, you should probally not be misting so much that it's making the aspen damp, if it does you should remove it as soon as you suspect the aspen has become "damp" that's how it harbours bacteria and mould and is no good for your snake.

Yeah good point!I guess I'd better change Simons bedding tonight after I feed him!

Ok mdrews,
I will try some of the other ways but once she is bluing i just spray? Like I mentioned I place wet paper towel on top of the warm hide while shedding as it gives her a damp rough spot to slde along and work her shed. Oh yeah I heat with a 50 watt infrared bulb which shines right on top of the warm hide and paper towels. I dampen the towels, squeeze most of the water out and the lamp seems to evaporate the rest. This also helps to keep humidity at a decent level.
I have been thinking about placing a wet sponge on top of warm hide to keep humidity in the 50% area?????? If this seems good any particular type sponge???? I know most say no misting and such, but the apartment I live in has hot water boiler heating which is so dry my girl gets noise bleeds.

The main difference for me, is when using a humid hide, you increase humidity locally. So your corn can choose if it wants to be in a more humid environment,

whilst with just spraying thevivarium you give your snake no choice but to be more humid all the time.

Well it's not as if I soak the animal...they don't have much of a choice in the wild with the humidity either...

Alot more choice in the wild than there is in a three foot vivarium :shrugs

I have to say I totally agree. I used to use this method in the beginning & I was getting bad sheds, since I saw Nanci's thread re: wet hides is when I decided to make one....SOOOOO cheap & mine LOVE IT. I have complete beautiful sheds now.
Grason is in his right now. Will snap a photo & upload it & also I will find that thread Nanci has on how to make one. BRB :dancer:

I can't find Nanci's thread so I hope I do this correctly. UGH!

Here is Grason (7mth old) today in his WetHide. He is an anery so look for the grey & black up top towards the back of the hide. I put the hide in when its that time of the mth. I keep track of when everyone goes into blue so I know about a wk ahead when they will start so I make it & stick it in & they go right on in & I have beautiful sheds & happy snakes now. :D TY NANCI..hehe :dancer:

Ok now here's what you need. CHEAP & EASY! And no misting! Gotta love that...lol

A bag of Moss I have Pacific Bedding 'Green Forest Moss' 8qt. cost $11.99 which I think is expensive cause I went to a shop down the street instead of Petco or Walmart. Anyway it is packed so it goes a long way. I have 2 different size Glad Containers. Grason above is a 7mth old Corn. He weighs about 50g He is in a 3cup/34oz. Glade bowl. I bought the mixed/different size Glad containers. I wash & re-use them.
The other bowl is for my 10mth old Corn who weighs 135g & he fits perfect in it. Its not deep like the other one just wider cause he is longer. Its 31/8cup/25oz.

Make sure you add water it expands. I will leave it in for a few days & take it out if they aren't in it & stir the moss around & put it back. HTH :)
