First Feeding........ Success! (new viv pics)

Hi everyone!

So I fed Spot yesterday and it was rough at first. I kept dangling it in front of him and he was completely not interested. He just wanted to get out of his feeding bin that I put him in. After about 2 minutes my parents and brother (who were standing over me) said to just try again tomorrow, but then I said "what the heck" and I tried again. This time Spot looked at it right away and snatched it out of my hand. While he was choking down a pinkie, (so much fun to watch btw) I redid his viv! So here are new pics of my viv:

I am waiting for a huge peice of grapevine to come in the mail and that will be his centerpeice. He is currently hiding behind some leaves.

Congrats. on the first feeding, its always a relief when they eat for the first time. Perhaps you could also put a few hides in the viv.

though you should get some hides, it's not that big of a deal. Using aspen bedding allows for the snake to hide under it. BTW, u use the same aspen as me! Also, what is that little grey box in the center front?

Agree but....... I wouldn't go out and buy them because you already spend enough money so far and you can make your own. You can use cereal box, or macaroni boxes, used toilet paper rolls. And paint the boxes if you want. If the snake poops on them, just throw it out and make another. Other folks on here have also use toilet paper tubes and hang them from the top(somehow) I just don't want your "start up" cost to get out of hand, thats all.

Congratulations! You can just put him in the feeding bin with the pink, you know. You don't have to hand it to him. (But I find it easier to hand them the pink or at least dangle them into the bin and let them take it, then lower them into the bin and close the lid and go clean their viv- they are concentrating on the pink, not flying around getting their tail pinched in the lid!)

The viv looks much more interesting!!

Congrats, cool viv, BIG pictures. I would not put the light over the water as the water will get warm and cause mold, plus you don't want snake soup.
The stick is nice but maybe more on at 30 degrees, also putting the vines around the stick and bunching creates another hiding place.

Oh sorry everyone for the "nonreply". That grey box in the center is a stepping stone from home depot. I figure I would give him something rough to rub up on (although I sanded all the edges :shrugs:) in case he wants to shed. He moved while under the aspen and I did not see him at all. He is now on the warm side of the cage. That light above the water is 4.5 watts... it's not heating anything up anytime soon. However, the temp of the aspen by his water is 68 degrees. Is that too cold?

P.S. I also did not know I could just leave him in the bin and close the lid. I thought I had to "play live mouse" with it, lol.

That's how I feed all my adults- put the mouse in, go get the snake, put the snake in, close the lid and go get the next one. They'd be horrified if I started shaking the mouse around! Plus, when Jake was doing his feeding strike thing last spring, and I tried tease-feeding him, I found out he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Hahaha ok then. Well one more thing. I know where my snake is, (which is buried under aspen on the heating pad) and I was wondering about his poop. Now that it has been 2 days I can handle him, I know that, but what about poop?

How often should I replace his aspen?

How do I find his poop?

What does poop look like?

68 degrees? That's really low. I would suggest raising it to around 85 degrees on the warm side and the uper 70's/lower 80's on the cold side. You shoul probably buy an under tank heat pad. I like your stepping stone idea. I think that it will help him shed a lot. Just remember that if theres just a little substrate underneath it, then it is possible for your corn to get under it, kick out the substrate that is holding the heavy brick up nd then get fatally squished. So when replacing your substrate you should remember this.

Hmm... well I have a heating pad under the warm side, and that is at 85, should I replace that 4.5 watt bulb with maybe a 20 watt? Yea that's what I'll do... and I'll monitor it with my heat gun. There is ZERO substrate under that rock, I made sure of that, and yes, it is pretty heavy and would definetly squish my snake.

Cool. If the warm side is at 85 degrees, then dont bother with a heat lamp. Unless you live in a really cold climate, and the cold side of the tank is freezing, then a heat lamps dosen't seem necessary.

About the heat gun... I dont trust those things... I just believe that they are amazing for smooth surfaces, but for rough substrate i wouldnt go with it. Just get a thermometer.

Well, good luck.

You wouldn't want to see snake poop. Lol. Anyway, you'll know when you see it. It may dry up if you havent cleaned the cage recently. It will be brown, and that's all I can say. It shouldn't be runny.

It can be found under the substrate on the bottom of the tank. I always find some around the edges on the bottom and in the very bottom corners of the tank.

Replacing the aspen... If you're a rich clean freak, then you can replace it once a week. I replace it about every 2-3 weeks. My plan is this:
1. Feed snake in seperate tank in seperate area.
2. Take out cage furniture.
3. Remove and trash substrate.
4. Scrape up dry poo.
5. Spray whole tank with Wipe Out 1.
6. While W.O. 1 is sinking in, use W.O. 2 to clean water bowl and furniture.
7. Wipe up W.O. 1 and let air dry for approx. 10 mins.
8. Replace the subtrate.
9. Put Cage furniture in.
10. Fill water bowl.
11. Carefully put snake back in.

The reason for the drying is that the fumes from Wipe out can be harmful to our snake. Also because of this reason, I would feed your snake in a seperate room.
