I brought home my first corn snake last night (a ghost). I can't believe how TINY hatchlings are! This one is 12" long. I read in a thread around here somewhere that corns are 8-12" when they hatch, is this really true?
It's been very active and curious about it's new home, exploring it thoroughly and every so often disappearing into the aspen. Seems to be having a blast. Doesn't seem frightened at all to be watched but does seem interested in watching me through the glass.
Since it is so small, do you think there's a chance this one hasn't eaten yet (since being hatched)? How old are hatchlings (on average) when a pet store aquires them?
I drove an hour (one way) to another pet store and got the tiniest pinks they had... they should be small enough when it does come time to try feeding.
I've noticed it seems to like resting (sleeping?) out in the open areas of the tank. I'm assuming it's sleeping because it's being still and when approached doesn't frighten at all, then slowly will raise it's head and look at me, flick it's tongue and start moving about again.
From some threads I've read I expected it to move away quickly when there's movement outside the tank, but so far seems to be acting exactly the opposite... when there's movement it perks up and tries to investigate... I'm assuming this is a good sign.
Am I correct in figuring 7 days before attempting first feed, or should I try sooner since this is such a tiny thing?
What types of scales do people use to monitor weights (kitchen food scale)?
I've seen it yawn twice now and get a drink of water (it's soooo cute!)
