Hi

Im new to this site and I was wandering if any of you could help me with some of my questions?

Im 14 years old and im buying a Corn Snake and tank in a month.

I can only spend about £50 on my tank including buying it so I was wandering if you could tell me some cheep things which my tank needs and what toys, bedding and stufff by Small Corn Snake would need.
By the way, how big sould the tank be for a small Corn Snake?
Im sure I will have more questions to ask
:D

Thanks very much.

well here is a list of things you will need

1. at lest a 10 gallon aquarium
2.you might want to use paper towls as a sustrate tell the snake gets older.
3.a heat pad which u can go to a pet smart or a regular pet store to get.
4 a water bowl which which should be big enough for the snake to completly sumerge in but not to big.
5. plenty of hiding places like small boxes and such or a half log which u can buy at a pet store
6. a healty cornsnake

Thank very much, But here ar some more Questions, sry:)

Hi

Thank you very much for all that help it will help me a lot.
But when you say a 10 gallon tank how big is that in feet about and will I need to get a bigger tank as my snake gets bigger?

Thank you very much for helping me so quickly.

:D

Lo....
50 quid is pushing it a little bit to get set up totally...
let me see...
when i got my first corn i bought the following..
3ft glass aquarium... (had it years.. cost me about 25 quid back in the early 90`s) - tank size can be vary a bit.. young corns dont liek to be out in the open and so can be kept in small enclosures.. in a larger one liek this you`ll need more hides and stuff to keep snakey happy....
Tight fitting reptile lid (escape proof!) - about 25 quid
Heat mat- 7watt - about a tenner
Heat lamp and holder - about a fiver
Substrate - mind was about 4 quid for a 10kg bag of "maze" organic kitty litter (freeze-dried corn chips) but you could use paper towels if you have no pennies left..
Stand? well you got to put the tank on something...
Mine is a sideboard ive had a while.. put a row of polystyrene tyles down, cover that in a peice of plywood cut the same size as your tank (3 quid from builders yard)... then heat mat at one end,.then tank on top.

then you need a drinking bowl and several hides.. i find my corn likes a home-made hide best.. simply a poster-tube thingy taped off at one end (dont allow any sticky surfaces to be present anywhere incase your snake gets stuck to it heheheh

that should give you an idea..
including the snake, i spent nearly a ton on getting set up.,, and thats depsite already owning the tank! not a cheap hobby to get into but a rewarding one nonetheless :)

edit :-
Ive just read that and my spelling is awful :p
i`ll blame the chardonnay heheheh
bottums up!

You can buy a snake starter kit which includes viv, heat mat, water bowl, thermometer (not a very good one though) and a piece of bark. This is what I bought along with my first snake and it cost me £40 or £50. It was about 1.5 feet long and was large enough to keep my snake in until she was two feet long. If you buy something like this it will give you time to save up for a bigger viv, about three feet long. I recommend buying The Corn Snake Manual by Bill and Kathy Love before you buy your corn. Good luck.

Feeding

Hi

I was just wandering what are good foods to feed a young Corn Snake and How much and How much will it cost?

Thanks

Thanks!

I was lost!

I'm glad some of you guys from across the pond showed up to translate english into english! :D

Feed your corn mice. It is the only food item necessary to maintain good health.

Mice feeding

How much do the mice cost?
Young mice or adult mice?
How many times a week?
Any spiecil type of mice?

This is for a young Corn Snake(havent seen it yet so im not sure how young).

Thanks

Young snakes are usually fed one baby mouse a week or one every four days for faster growth. Snakes don't cost much to feed but the mice get cheaper if you buy them in bulk. From www.livefood.co.uk you can buy a bag of fifty pinkies for £12.50 but it's better to buy pinkies from pet shops in small numbers as they defrost quickly in the post. The sizes of mice increases with the size of your snake until it is large enough to eat large adult mice (£22.50 per fifty). Snakes usually eat one mouse a week so that works out at around £25-£30 a year. If you only have one snake then I'd suggest buying mice from a good pet shop to avoid the defrosting.

Colours of Corn Snakes

Hi

Im just wandering what are the most common colours of Corn Snakes?

What other colours do they come in?

What colours are your Corn Snakes?

Thanks

Corns come in a huge number of colours. The three most common are normals, amelanistics and anerytheristics. Normals have red and brown colours but there are many varieties. Amels are red/orange/yellow coloured as they have no black pigment. Aneries are black and white as they have no red pigment. These snakes will cost you £15-£25 each as they are the most common. For a very new colour morph you can expect to pay a lot more and even more still for an adult snake. There are too many colours to talk about here but you can look at some pictures on Serpenco's website at www.serpenco.com

I have a Carolina (a type of normal) that is redish-brown with brown saddles and an Amel. I used to have an Anery but it died and I am getting a Butter soon.

hehe perhaps those of us from the UK`s more distinct areas should type things the way we pronounce them.. that would really get you confused :)
ever heard Brummie? Geordie? Scouse? Yellowbelly? Cockney?

hehe english is far from being a universal language even in its native land ;)
