I am currently using an Exo-Terra Heat Wave UTH (medium) and the ZooMed 500R thermostat in my 20 long viv. I dont have a substrate in there yet because there is no snake (getting him friday).

My problem is that I cant get the warm side below 87 degrees...even on the lowest setting it ranges from 87-89. Will this go down much when I add the aspen substrate? And if not will the slightly high temp cause any problems? Dont worry I wont even put him in until I get this figured out...

I don't really see an issue with a 87-89 for the warm side, as long as its not concentrated in one area. The temperature may change with the aspen, but you have to remember the snake will be touching the bottom of the tank, so it won't make a difference what the temperature is with the aspen. As long as you have a decent sized tank with plenty of room for the snake to thermo-regulate, then there should not be any issues.
 
hmm thats weird im using the same setup. i have the coomed 500r. and pretty much i put my setting in the middle and alittle towards the low side and it works just fine. i have mine set to where at 82.5 degrees the thermosat will turn on and heat up to like 84 and then turn off. and then it will go up like another 1 degree. but ya you have to make sure you got a thermtor with probe too!
 
I wasn't too clear about what I was talking about so...yeah, my brother is using the exo terra heatwave medium too, so I would just make my own thermostat??? that is what me and my brother did :)
 
That sounds fine. My heat pad to the touch produces heat up to about 90F, but this dissipates through the substrate and probably won't heat the air to that temperature, so that is fine. It won't burn the snake, and the temperature is bound to vary slightly depending on what heat source you use. Somewhere between 80F and 85F is good but temperatures under a heat lamp or directly on top of the heat source can touch 90. As soon as you cover the heat source with a substrate though the reading will go lower I expect.
 
a rheostat might help you with the UTH being too hot.

Thanks for the input everybody! I upgraded from an $8 little digital thermometer to the Zilla with 2 probes. That 87-89*F was actually 82-85. So I guess there never was a problem in the first place. Thanks again for the advice and I will def keep these in mind if I have heating problems down the road.

Jcapicy...was that last question meant for me? If so I got them new from a pet shop. I will probably just throw the other one on the cool side for sh!ts and giggles.
