Does anyone have an adult in a 55 gallon?

I went in to the pet store today to get a bigger tank for my snow....and they had no screen tops for a 40 gallon breeder which is what I wanted.

The only bigger then 20 L tops they had were for a 55 gallon....so thats what I got. 55 gallon tank with top, but its being delivered this weekend.

Does anyone have any snakes in a 55? Can you post pics because if the thing is huge I dont know what Im going to fill it up with. Looking for ideas I guess......

Thanks!

I don't think that 55 gallons have nearly as much floor space as a 40 gallon breeder. Normally Petsmart/Petco have 40 gallon breeders made by All-Glass with sliding locking lids. Those tanks are the bomb.

Obviously 55 gallons are a lot taller, so I'd look into making something that creates almost a 2nd floor for the snake.

A 55 gallon tank has the measurements 48"X13"X20" Length, Width, Height. I agree with joejr14 that the Zilla 40 breeder is a better choice. You also probably paid more for the 55 because it was made to hold water, hence thicker glass, which also mean heavy. The Zilla 40 breeder is not designed to hold a full tank of water and the screen lid slides in place and can be locked so it is great for keeping the snake in and unwanteds out. Hagen just came out with a new Exoterra 40 breeder than opens from the front via doors that latch and the top is screened. It is very nice. The only drawback is price. At $230 MSRP that's a little steep!

I didnt even see the tank....are these dimensions right

LxWxH

55 gallon
48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21

40 breeder
36 3/16 x 18 1/4 x 16 15/16

So your giving up 6 inches in width, to have 12 more inches of length. Shes in a 20 L with appr. 12 inches of width.

Well, based on those dimensions a 55 gallon would have a floor area of 655 3/16 inches, and a 40 breeder would have an area of 660 inches. So there is more area on the floor with a 40 breeder and I'm assuming it would also be a cheaper tank. As has been stated, the 40 breeder would also be a lot lighter. If you're content with having the extra height with the 55 then go ahead and use it. Create a PVC ledge and buy a bunch of fake plants from Michaels or Jo-Anne.

Nagini in her 55.

She climbs up in all the plants.

I can try to take pics later, but I have my big boy in a 55. I got it from craigslist for 25 bucks...so that is why he gets that instead of a breeder 40. He doesn't have any climbing room right now though...I do need to get him something to climb.

My snake lives in a 52" long by 16" wide vivarium. At first it seemed huge, but I have made it like a small patch of forest for my corn.
I have 2 "garlands" of fake leaves and one spray of fake fern (total cost about $16 at craft store).
I have 2 hides, but the fake leaves make hides for her so she has several places she can go to feel safe and still watch us.
The viv is 18" high so I have a shelf, she mostly uses it to probe for weak spots in her containment, but one of the garlands is twisted around it making it a leafy platform/hide.
Cheerio's viv is nicely filled with just a few garlands and they are easy to remove when cleaning.

The best way I've seen to add another level is Bruce's PVC piping shelf; easy, cheap, and clean. Reps for that.

Bottom line, if you have the space to put it in you can make a big viv work for low cash. My snake is almost 5' long (860 grams) and she has room to roam and plenty of places to "hide and peek".

I have some pics from when I "adapted it" to my snake(it was a saltwater fish tank). I'll get my daughter to take some as it is now and post them in the "show me your viv" thread.

I thought my guy was in a 55gal. It was bought for the Bearded dragono that we never got for my daughter. I'm at work right now and so can't get to Photobucket to post a picture. It really isn't that big, although possibly it's because he's 5 1/2 ft, so it doesn't seem that big. He has his bowl, so ivy and a hollow log that goes across the back and one extra lg hide that he doesn't fit in well anymore... It really didn't take much to fill it up.
