Dang Refrigerator!

Repair or replace?

It's at least 6.5 years old. (Average lifespan is 14 years). But I bought it used, so who knows. Could be a year or three older.

Relatively simple problem- the freezer is fine, the refrigerator is 40F at the bottom, 65ish at the top. It went through a week or two of "hummmm CLICK" which I expect in hindsight was the switch for the compressor motor not working, but it has now given up. Is the motor itself ok? I don't know how to tell.

So they say if the cost of a repair is more than half the replacement cost (roughly $900 since I have to buy a smallish one to fit in the space) then buy a new one.

I'd have to pay someone to come out, diagnose it and repair it at $100/hour not counting parts. I'd guess $200-$400. But that's just a guess.

The icemaker died several months ago, causing a huge flood.

I can't decide, but the obvious less-hassle cure is just buy a new one.

This brand or different? If it has only lived half its expected lifetime, maybe I should try something different. But I really liked this Frigedaire while it lasted.

Sears has free delivery and take away right now.

Is this my punishment for buying two snakes worth the price of a new fridge???

Well, I have purchased a new Mouse Storage Device. I don't get it till Saturday, since I am going bicycle herping tomorrow...

The sales lady "tricked" me into spending 50% more than planned by showing me the most beautiful model which had the ice maker in the door, not taking up the top quarter of the freezer- extra room for mice! I hadn't previously considered this one, because my door to get in the house is small, but she told me they can remove the doors of the refrigerator to get it in. I knew they could remove the handles, but not the doors!

Unfortunately, changing refrigerators will involve moving my wine attic off the top of the current fridge- 40-some bottles and their rack. And there is going to be a major spring cleaning- do I really need frozen toad guts for scenting?

Although I don't usually buy extended warranties, I was weak because of the unexpected death of the old fridge. Plus they come out and clean/maintain it once a year for free. And I _did_ have a major AC repair bill due to a power surge from lightning- the refrigerator would be protected from that for five years.

Well, I'll post a pic next weekend after the mice move to their new home! Luckily, the freezer is functioning.
