Dumb animals?

That's amazing. There was another elephant that painted a scene with blues and reds and it turned out that she has witnessed paramedics in their blue uniforms load someone into an ambulance with red lights earlier that day. Animals are MUCH smarter than we will ever give them credit for. Thank you for posting this.

I couldn't believe that. I started getting nervous the elephant would make a mistake. That was fantastic.

That's incredible, oh and I know what you mean Nanci! She's a better artist than me! :grin01:

I love elephants, seeing them in the wild was an experience that will be seldom matched. Thanks for posting this Rich, I saw something similar on Animal Planet a few months ago, maybe it's from the same place.

Oh and LMAO Jenni :laugh01: I'd give you some more rep but I have to spread it around first.

She was probably thinking of another elephant that she lives closely with, or possibly an elephant friend of hers who may have passed away. Elephants form close bonds with one another, and do show signs of mourning when a member of their family group dies. They will even revisit the bones of relatives who have passed and nudge the bones with their trunks.

I've seen an elephant get stuck in a mud pit, and his fellow family members spent hours helping him get out. The most fascinating thing is that the one elephant that finally freed the stuck elephant did so by picking up a log and allowing the stuck elephant to grab onto it. Then, the helping elephant pulled hard and freed the stuck elephant. Amazing stuff. I love elephants. They're one of my favorite animals. :)

Actually, Don Soderberg sent me an email with the link to that video.....

I imagine it could very well be a self portrait.
I was just reading in National Geographic how elephants are one of the few mammal species (besides humans, apes and dolphins) who have self-recognition - meaning if you put a mirror in front of them - they know it is themself they are seeing in the reflection.

I think you guys burnt it out, it says "We're sorry, this video is no longer available".

What's the deal with large mammals? I'm always seeing things about elephants and whales that shows me much more than just "instinctual intelligence"(I think I just made-up that term for it).
They also seem to retain a solid awareness and memory of other creatures.
Elephants and whales, hmmm....

I dunno Alan, but I feel comforted knowing that humans are not the only intelligent creatures on the earth. Maybe we should let the whales and elephants run things for a while. LOL

I dunno, but if there is food for incentive, squirrels can be downright genius material....
