Hey everybody, i was just wondering if anybody has gone herping in minnesota? ive only seen a few snakes in the wild here, but i did see one beautiful timber rattlesnake sunning itself on the road by my buddy's farm. (which i helped it safely across):dancer:
 
Good question, Rick. I've lived here my whole life and have never seen one wild snake anywhere; but then again, I don't get out much. I'll be interested to see what anyone else has to say about your question.
 
yeah i want to hear what others have found.. i just got into snake's with in the past year so im curious as to what i might find. my friend has 300 acres down in redwing (where i saw the timber) and i thought that may be a good place to look.

Are you both MN herp society Members?
This June we are having an weekend event on field herping and you must be a member to participate. Its a great time and you do meet some really seasoned members and some pros in the Herp Field. I do recommend joining the MHS.

Where was this farm located?
Timbers are very rare and not found but only a small section of the state.

Also, again, I have to push the society. Next Month, Jim Gerholdt will be doing a talk on Rattlesnakes and may bring a few animals to talk aobut. I will also talk about some of the Harmless Mimics of Rattle snakes as well and bring in a few animals as well. (but I am not as cool as Jim)

Also, as snakes go, there are many that are fun that can be found in this state.
Some of my favorites are the Bull, Fox and Hognose.

I am planning on checking a few sites this week and next to see if I can find any eastern Newts and tiger salamanders. Yes, its about time they start showing up.

I do plan on doing some local "Field Herping" with some people through out this summer. I prefer to do this around summer when its more dry out. lol I don't mind crawling around in the mud but others might.
 
I grew up there. Most of my herping was in the Annandale area- a little south of St. Cloud. And around St. Paul, around the Mississippi and the St. Croix and the Zumbro Rivers, and some more northern Minnesota on trips.

Common Garter Snake, Plains Garter Snake, Bullsnake, Redbelly Snake, Smooth Green Snake.

Blandings Turtle, Painted Turtle, Snapping Turtle, Smooth Softshell Turtle, Spiny Softshell Turtle.

Tiger Salamander.

Bullfrog, Green Frog, Northern Leopard Frog, Pickeral Frog, Wood Frog, Mink Frog. (I got all the true frogs!)

Gray Treefrog, Western Chorus Frog.

Five-Lined Skink, Northern Prairie Skink.

American Toad.
 
That is pretty fascinating, you guys. One of my very first snakes was a bull snake, named Medusa. She actually had the sweetest personality, though I was told they usually don't. I think my daughter and I might need to be taking a few more nature walks this summer and look into the Herp Society.

i found/saw the timber just south of redwing minnesota, about a hour and fifteen minutes south of the mall of america.

Please join and check out our next Meeting on May 2nd. I think you will get a big kick out of it. Shhh.. don't tell any one but we do get speakers every month and we have talked a certain Well known Corn Snake Breeder into coming up this Fall to speak. More information will come along as the year progresses.
 
joining and being able to attend meetings is a little hard as of right now because i play baseball and thats everyday after school and weekends too! ill forsure come to a few meeting this summer though when im not working or playing hockey!

That's pretty funny. A different little birdie did tell me about that one. I would love to be there for that. I'll have to see what I can do. Thanks for reminding me.

i forgot to ask you where you go and look? do you live in the cities?

Oh you will miss out, Summer is when we do some of our really cool stuff like the Herp Survey for the DNR. But also a small tiny tidbit about the the MN Herp Society is that we meet the first Friday of every month. So its only one night a month.

No problem, look forward seeing you there. I am also glad that you heard about this from someone else. We are trying to get the word out on this one. This will be a great meeting and a good time. And I probably know that little Bird.

Also, I do plan on doing some Summer Field herping through out the twin cities. If you are interested let me know. I can shoot you pms or emails on where and when I do plan on doing this with some fellow MN Herp society Members. But again, it will be later in the season.

I do live in the Twin Cities. I have done Field Herping at parks and other areas around the cities. I also like walking along railroad tracks as well.

Heck, I got to the point where I keep a snake hook and buckets in my vehicle during the summer. You never know when you drive by and see a large snapping turtle trying to cross the road. I have many of times.
 
oh ok that sounds good! i live about a block and a half away from woodlake nature center? have you ever heard of it or even been there? ill probably be taking a few trips down there soon.

I go there all the time. I love to turtle watch at that lake. The have a nice population of Blanding turtles there.
Do you know they have no frogs in that lake due to the fact of the pollution from the nearby highway. I was informed about that last year from one of their naturalists.
 
no i did not know that! very interesting! i have not been there for a while, i went once last year when i was watching my aunts dog. but my school would always go on fieldtrips there, that was pretty fun.
 
oh actually i lied! i went there last year in biology class too! we saw lots of different turtles, and a really big snapper right on the side of the road.
