What Kind of bulb? What Heat-map?

<3 Corn Snakes
So Jasper presently has a regular halogen bulb, at least until I can get down to the pet store. I'm not sure what kind I should get (or, really, even what kind my small local pet shop carries).

The lamp is resting on top of the cage, about a foot and a half away from the substrate. I bought the Small Exo Terra Rainforest Habatat Kit, which conveniently didn't come with a bulb, and I'm not sure if I could get A red heat-glo bulb or a Or one of these sun-glo ones.

I think I'll probably be getting a heating pad if they carry one, but I've heard bad things about the rainforest one and the desert one seems like it might be too hot. I've got two inches of substrate though... (that coconut husk stuff).

Snakes prefer the belly warmth for proper digestion.
I use both a heating pad and a lamp, but you should have a heating pad at least.
You're right, the desert one is definitely too hot on it's own, but if you have a thermostat, that shouldn't be a problem.
What bad things have you heard about the rainforest one? I use that, and I haven't noticed any problems.
I use a thermostat to be on the safe side, but I'm not even sure it can create temps higher than 80...

Ugh, I forgot to mention, corn snakes do not need UV light, in fact, UV can be harmful to a number of morphs.
Go for one of the bulbs that doesn't advertise having UV rays.

An unregulated heat mat can reach over 100 degrees in around an hour, and they can hit 120 degrees. I really would recommend using a stat.

I agree that you don't need both a bulb and a mat as heat sources. It's probably best to decide on one or the other.

Snakes don't need artificial light as long as the tank is in a room with natural sunlight. If you want a bulb to make the tank look better and give you a good view, get one that gives off as little heat as possible. Can't advise on specifics as I only use mats and none of my guys have bulbs.

That it craps out after a few months.

My only issue with using both a heat lamp and a heat mat is that it's a small-ish tank, and wider from bottom to top than across the bottom. There wouldn't be any real heat regulation, I wouldn't think.

I use the desert mats on some vivs. I think they ALL crap out after a while. I have mine on thermostats. I was afraid the rainforest mat wouldn't get hot enough. Heat lamps are a fire and burn hazard. I wouldn't use one on an animal that doesn't require a basking spot.

I'll add a thermostat to my shopping list, then. Thanks. ^_^

Mildly worried that my pet store won't carry the size heat pad I need. I've moved her into my room, which is the warmest by preference.

I have a ceramic bulb covered by a guard, with a dimming thermostat. I think it comes down to personal preference, when I got mind I found that as I newspaper the bottom of the tank/ the floor was warm. I had them on heat mats when they were babies and were in tubs. Dont know why I just prefer ceramics

Oh and if you do get a bulb ALWAYS have a guard if the snake would be able to reach it in any way shape or from and a thermostat as they can get very hot.

The lamp rests on top of the terrarium, but as I noticed this morning she can get on top of the styrofoam wall at the back, awfully close to the light. I might move it forward so it's not heating the mesh screen.

It all really depends on my pet store, and what's available. If I can ever get down there. I'm kinda working around the fact that my dad just got back from the hospital and doesn't know I bought a snake yet... And he's in a bit of a mood so I don't want to broach the subject...

*is soooo doomed*

Like I feared, the pet store didn't have the right size mat. So I've ordered one. In the meantime, Jasper gets a 100w red light bulb.
