How often should I check for eggs?

Our gravid female shed about 10 days ago. I added a hide box with moist coconut and moss and she has spent a lot of time in there. Yesterday she was trying to escape, so I covered her terrarium with a blanket to give her privacy. How often should I be checking to see if she's laid. I don't want to disturb her to often. Thanks.

After their pre lay shed, I check once a day. I don't expect to start seeing anything until day 7-14 though. But you never know so I start checking right away.

Do they bury the eggs or will they lay them on top of the substrate (i.e. do I need to check under the material)? Thanks.

In my experience, females tend to make a sort of nest in the laying substrate, sometimes burrowing to the bottom of the laying box. I check my girls once every 24 hours, like Matthew said.

If you're using a clear/semi clear container and you can't see anything from above or the side, then you could gently and carefully lift it up (don't tilt it) so you can check from underneath.

If you're using the coco stuff on the bottom of the container, with a layer of moss over the top, then you could open the lid gently, then lift the moss carefully to check. Try to disturb her as little as possible and if you find her in the process of laying, then leave her well alone for a good few hours before checking again.

Hope that helps, good luck,

You said she was "trying to escape"....the laybox does have a hole in it right? I mean, can she get in and out of it as she pleases?

Yes, she can get into the lay box. In fact, she spends most of the day in the lay box. She only comes out of it at night when she stays under her log. She has been digging around in the lay box, so I hope it's soon. She is on day 12 following her shed; this waiting part is making me anxious.
