Question about temperature

corn snakey

New member
Currently I have a 20 gallon viv. and I placed a heating pad (with no thermostat, but I am trying to get one) under the tank, with some towels separating direct contact from the tank to the heating pad.

I also have a digital thermometer and when I place the little probe at the bottom of the glass it reads about 90-92 which concerns me.

Is it okay to have the glass (below the substrate) at 90-92 degrees?

thanks to all! (just got a 7-8month corn yesterday)

90 is about as high as you want to go. Optimally it should be 85-88.

But on warm days if your room temp goes up, the warm side temp will go up as well. Instead of towels and messing with distances from the tank, you are better off with a lamp dimmer or a thermostat so you can actually control the UTH.

thank you flagg. but where is the best place to buy a thermostat?

are they usually locally sold at pet stores for reptiles?

For some reason alot of pet stores don't carry the thermostats. I just purchased one (ZooMed500r) from www.bigalsonline.com There are other reputable online stores also, like reptilesupply.com and reptiledirect.com

Hope that helps.
