So I am considering getting an Animal Plastics rack...the economy one that holds either 16qt or 32qt tubs. I was wondering if I buy hatchlings and use the 16qt tubs, can I use them lidless with this rack or is it definitely a risk (how big is the gap?)? If so, at what point can you go lidless safely with this rack? Thanks
 
I have that rack and there is a bit of a gap at the top. I have adults in it right now and they're fine obviously. I wouldn't put little tiny babys in it, dunno how big they need to be before they can't get out of it.
 
I've had 9 hatchlings in my AP rack so far with zero problems. I used smaller lidded tubs until they were about 2 months old and then I upgraded them to the lidless. Hope that helps.
 
I have one as well and you can tell from the picture below there is a gap.

If you are interested they do sell them in different sizes as well, you just need to ask. I know Nanci has larger tubs in her setups.

Now also they sell the normal rack in 8 and 10 shelve units as well. I want to get the 10 shelf one from them.
 
I wanted to put hatchlings in my first rack, and the gap scared me, but they were too tight with lids. The bins would slide in, but they scratched the shelves. The lids of the bins were nearly too wide. The second rack is tighter, too tight for lids, but I still wouldn't put a new hatchling in it. When I got Jewel, she was 28 grams, and I was quite comfortable putting her in the rack. My littlest guys now are 18-19- honestly, it would still make me nervous. Once they're on peach fuzzies, you should be ok.
 
As long as you get the exact model Sterilite it is designed for, 1754 and 1756 I believe, there should be virtually no gap.
Only Target seems to sell these tubs. I housed hatchlings with no problems, there is virtually no gap and I drilled 1/8" holes with a rotary tool and diamond coated drill bit.

There is no way I could even try to slide it in with a lid, as there is zero gap.
 
I've got the same one as Nanci, I always forget the qt numbers.. I think it's 66? Anyway, they are high enough that the babies can't really reach the top, and by the time they can they're too big to get out. I wouldn't blame anyone for being cautious, but I have one still on pinks in the tubs.. I would say too that they vary a bit from one 'space' to another so I've put the littlest one in the tub that fits tightest.
 
Thanks everyone!! I can't wait to place an order. I'm moving to Florida in 2 weeks, so I can't have it until then....but I am so excited. (moreso because of the babies I am planning to fill it with!) I'll just be getting hatchlings though, so I didn't want to buy a smaller rack that they will not fit in for long. I guess I will try to use it for awhile with the lids first if the gap appears too big. I don't want to risk losing a baby. Thanks again!
 
They do make a hatchling one using 6qt (I'll be ordering one after I test out this 15/32qt one that's supposed to come in this week). The hatchling rack is called a 1752 and a 5 shelf (15 bins) is $125 + $45 shipping.
 
You could keep the hatchlings in smaller bins, with lids, either on the rack or in the "real" bins in the rack. That heat tape gets REALLY hot- don't forget a thermostat, and if you want one with the 66 qt bins like mine, it's not on their website, but it's a stock size. They have excellent customer service. I love those Sterilite bins that have the locking latches on the sides- I use those for feeding bins, but they'd be perfect for hatchling homes.
 
And don't forget you need a three prong to two prong adaptor, probably, for the heat tape to go to the thermostat.
