What kind of Thermostat?

Em Wright

The Ice Queen
I am in desperate need of a new thermostat. Today we checked the temp in Mali's tank and it read 93 degrees F. We turned it down and eventually the temp went back to where it needed to be, but the constant need to turn up/down and not knowing if it's too much or not enough is getting annoying. It's also dangerous for Mali... I'd hate for her to get burned or sick because of the change in temps all the time. :awcrap:

So what should I look for that is of good quality, but won't kill my wallet. Any suggestions would be great!

I have one of the previous model of that and am happy with it, and I have a lot of Herpstats, but those are over $100. But worth it! They had a sale at Thanksgiving last year, maybe they will again! I just got to see that the high temp alarm on my Herpstat in Maizey/Jake's cage stack worked when my AC died Saturday. I had it set to go off if the cage temp reached 8F over the thermostat's set temp, and it did!

That's a bit on the steep side when you factor in shipping. :(

Wasn't there one on Big Al's Aquariums that was really good and only like $22? I rememeber being directed there and seeing it, but now I can't seem to find it...

There's the ZooMed 500R for about that price. They are ok in general, but just not as steady as the BAH or the Herpstat. You for sure need a probed thermometer to keep an eye on it, since it doesn't have a digital read out. Think about saving for a good one, though. Over the course of your snake's 20 year life, a more reliable thermostat will be so worth it. They are just so hassle-free.

The Ranco is the BARE minimum thermostat (in terms of quality) that we will use. It is only ~$80 shipped from RBI. Anything cheaper is, well, just an expensive way to risk killing your snake. We have used over 8 Rancos continuously or the past 10 years. No unit itself has ever failed. I'm running about 20 of them right this second. No failures. Knock on wood, but can you find someone that uses that many cheap ones for that long with that level of reliability? I doubt it.

I even use one that was submerged in water off and on for six months due to sitting in a bucket under a leaky roof while not in us......and it works perfectly.....lol. Unbelievable! The Johnson's are pretty much AS GOOD, but harder to program. It does have added features, though. Herpstats are nice, but they cost a good bit more and aren't any better for what we need for cornsnakes.

I'll be honest - those cheap ones are just NOT good enough for me to use to risk even on snake. STAY AWAY FROM RHEOSTAT STYLE CONTROLLERS........unless your ambient temperature fluctuates by less than 2 degrees over a 24 hour period. Better yet, just stay away from them. Do a search and read the older posts about WHY.
