I have a question about aspen

Hi all,

I have a question, hope you can answer it. I want to gte some aspen for my new corn. I don't know what size to buy. The aspen will be going into a 20 gallon long tank. I have choices between these sizes: 10 QT, 5 QT, 4 QT and 1 QT. What size would fit perfectly in a 20 gallon long tank?

Thank you.

I'd personally go with the largest size. You're going to have to do spot changes to remove waste, and then you'll also have to change it all out at times. Go with the best deal for your buck!

You may as well buy the bigger 10 qt. bag, overall it's cheaper. Also, you will need to change the aspen every 5-6 weeks anyways, not to mention you remove a bit each time you clean up after defecation and add back small handfuls to replace it.

Thank you all.

I will be getting my aspen from reptilesupply.com. I will get the large one. 10 qt. How much will I have left over after I fill the 20 gallon long tank with aspen?

I have another question... how many inches deep should the aspen be? 2 inches?

Thanks again!

You will still have a LOT leftover. The stuff is really packed in there tight, and sometimes comes out in pieces that you will break apart. I buy the large bag and it can last a while.

I put in about 2-3 inches. My corns love to tunnel through it. Creates an additional hide for them.

Thanks GoldTtop (I remember you from chat last night, hey), and ComoxCorn!

I think I might use some for my blue tongue skink.

I used to buy care fresh for my skink, but it sucked all the humidity out of his cage and he never came out (he was always under the care fresh). So I took it out. I think the aspen is much more atractive, so I will use some for both my new corn and my bts.

Thanks you guys!!

A word of caution, OP. If you're putting a baby into a 20-gal viv with 2-3 inches of aspen, you may be in for a challenge locating your little darling. I adjust the depth of the bedding according to the size of the snake. Mine with aspen have about 3x their own depth. That also makes it easier to find waste to spot clean. Enjoy!

I don't have any trouble finding my 21g baby in a 20L- but she is always out, hoping it's feeding day! I give everybody a good 2-3".
