Thermostat Upgrade...

Murf301

Believe The Hype!
I have two zoomed 10-20gl UTH's one on each of my snakes viv's hooked up to
those zoomed rheostats. I find that even when they are barely turned to the on position they still can reach temps of 98-101.(I dont leave them on unsupervised) I wanna find a digital thermostat thats reasonably priced that i could hook both UTH's up to. If someone could lead me to one it be greatly appreciated

I definitely recommend a Ranco ETC-111000.

They can be found here.

They cost $60 regularly (not including shipping), which is pricey. I bought mine on Ebay for $50 shipped.

One thing to mention though is that they need to be wired by YOU. They sell them pre-wired, but it's $80 + shipping like that.

The wiring took me about 15 minutes, and I have never wired anything in my LIFE. It's that easy.

I used thissite, which is simply awesome, to learn the wiring procedures.

okay. thanks i looked it over, the wiring looks pretty str8 forward. Going this route is alot cheaper that buying this helix one i was looking at. Here

The Helix one is likely a better model, but the Ranco is probably better for the cost.

A lot of people also use the Zoomed 500R thermostat. It's much cheaper than anything out there, but it's not that great. Most people that have used it have not had major problems, but they did have to supervise it somewhat. It's temps tend to fluctuate, or so I hear. I've never used it myself. A lot of people here have said that they wouldn't really recommend anything below a Ranco or Johnson thermostat.

Well, when you wire the Ranco, you wire it to a strip outlet like this one:

So technically, you can plug in as many UTHs as you can fit on one extension cord. However, like most digital thermometers/thermostats, it uses a probe to detect the temperature.

You'll only be able to put the probe in ONE viv, so it'll be reading the temp of that viv. So if THAT viv gets over a certain temp, your thermostat will turn off ALL UTHs you have plugged in, and vice versa.

This will probably not pose a problem is all vivs are nearby and likely to be the same temp. But it may require supervision sometimes, with a digital thermostat in each viv so you can be sure everything is fine.

I ended up using a two, but it is better to use a three if you can easily and cheaply get one. With a three, you can twist both ground wires together so you don't risk electric shock when plugging in three-prong plugs into the extension cord.

Since I know I'm only going to be plugging in two-prong plugs, and three-prong cost a lot more, I just went with a two-prong.

But safety is more important and you shouldn't necessarily follow my lead :D

Well actually, the surge protector like the one pictured was three-prong. The extension cord was two-prong.

It is ideal to have both be three.
