Lid on or off?

My baby corn is in a big tank (lots of hides dont worry).

Is it okay to leave the lid off, or is it better to be on?

No, he is tiny, the length of his body can't even get close to the top?

Besides escaping, are there any other affects of no lid (not permanently, just for a period of time)

Your snake is going to try anything to get out. One of my snakes is in a 29 gallon tank that is almost twice his length high and somehow he still manages to get to the top.

I think escaping is the best reason to always keep the lid on with books and weights on top, as Alan said.

You do not want your snake to escape. That's just irresponsible.

Is there a reason you'd rather not have the lid on?

Trust me it doesn't matter how little it is it will get out even with a lid. You need locks, I have locks and bricks, corns are the best escape artists. Why wouldn't you want the lid on anyway? It's much safer, IMO leaving it off is stupid and will only cause you trouble eventually.

No just sometimes in the afternoon i'd like to leave it off till i sleep so that I can go in and either add new things (it's a new snake/tank), or change his water, or handle him?

I've seen plenty of pics with a tiny snake wedged between the lid and the top edge of the tank. I have always wondered how they got up there.

It's fine to take it off to move things, take the snake out, and clean etc, but if the snake is in the tank and you are not standing right there watching then put the lid back on so the snake does not escape. Even a few seconds is enough for it to escape.

I got a hondo that is made of superball type material, I swear.
If I open his tub he will ***SPROINGGG*** out like a champion pole vaulter.
Seriously, losing a snake will make you feel like the worst daddy/mommy ever.

OK, how about this reason....

don't start bad habits....eventually, one day, your snake will be big enough to reach the top without question. Only he's not going to tell you when that day comes, he's just gonna make a break for it.....

so, its better to just get into the good habit of only having the lid off when you are right there in the room, as opposed to leaving the lid off and maybe getting distracted and leaving it off for longer than you meant to, or having your snake make a fast break while your back is turned...

(i just really like that smiley)

Ive seen a snake use the corner to crawl up to the top. It looks impossible, but it happened right in front of me - it was a baby corn too. Do not leave the tank lid off!
