Thermostat Diagnostics!

See if you can figure this out at first glance:

As I'm about to go out the door to go to work, I see my Herpstat has a red light and is displaying a temp of 78.8. It drops a tenth of a degree as I watch it. It continues to drop slowly. My probed thermostat reads 83F in the viv with the stat probe and 102F in the identical viv next to it.

*********************************************************

Dang Herpstat is failing! It just did this to me a month ago, but recovered, and I haven't had a problem till now! I'll have to call what's-his-name and find out what's going on! I'll unplug it and plug it back in to reboot it.

Why is Noah's mat so hot? The thermometer is reading inaccurately! But wait, I spot checked it with a temp gun a few weeks ago, and it was correct. I'll just check again to be sure. Yes, the mat is really 102F.

The mat must not be connected to the stat! But then it wouldn't be on at all...

The other mat must be wearing out, failing! I'll lift up the viv and see what size it is so I can buy a new one.

It's quite warm! I'll just get an accurate temp with the temp gun!

And as I open the viv and dig through the aspen, before I even see it, the REAL solution hits me.

The stat probe has become dislodged and is just hanging out in mid-level aspen, of which there is a three inch layer for Zee, the deep burrower...

DOH!!! Tape the probes back down with aluminum tape, and watch the thermometer climb to 107F!

I hope I can diagnose an un-seated stat probe more quickly next time, like at first glance...
