Thermostat and use of power strip?

I was wondering if you have a thermostat that is rated for 500watts but your heat pads are only running 16watts. Could you plug a power strip in and plug more into that thermostat as long as they are all the same wattage and won't exceet 500watts? Thanks for any info.
