Labratory Mice

I heard about a certain type of Mice that have around 25 babies at a time and can't remember the name of them. If anyone knows the name of them and were to purchase them I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Becky

Swiss Webster is a strain of lab mice that are known for large litters. 25 is pr4obably an exaggeration. Mine average closer to 15 to 20 per litter. They are also known to be hardy and healthy and good mothers. You can buy them from Jackson Laboratories or SAS in New York. You could do a Goggle and see if there are any closer to you. I have them in So. Utah but it is very expensive to ship live mice.

<y research days are coming back to me. I miss those days. The swiss wbsters are the best. I used to breed a huge colony back in the day. I think the most i got was 18 .I agree they are great mothers. If you need help setting them up give a jingle i am glade to help. Jackson Laboratories is the best to get them from.

wow, cause I'm just an outside wee little people and not a labratory they don't want to deal with me! oh well! What I'd give for some Swiss Websters!

I've never been able to find a lab mouse supplier that will deal with the general public. I have obtained white albino mice from feeder breeders at the local reptile show that are probably swiss webster, at least partially, they would often have as many as 18 in a litter.

Unfortunately I never kept a pure strain of them, and my original trio are no longer around. I'll have to get some new ones next time I make it to the show.

OK here is a link: http://www.aceanimals.com/index.html

They not only have Swiss Websters they also have Sprague Dawley rats. The mice were about $5 each and the rats were around $10. Remember, you are not buying feeders here, you are buying breeding stock. I’ve got to warn you however, the shipping will set you on your heals. It is not like shipping frozen mice.

Just a note, I purchased my Swiss Websters about 20 years ago. I bought 5 males and 25 females. I broke them into five 1.5 colonies. I don’t remember how much I paid for them but it was way too much. Everyone thought I was nuts. Since then I have raised literally tens of thousands of mice from the original group. I have never had a mouse with a tumor. I have never had any kind of illness that spread beyond one or two mice. I have never had any of the problems I hear other breeders complaining about. Maybe it’s just me.

Here is a link for Harlan Laboratories: http://www.harlan.com/

They have offices all over the country and deliver to Universities all over the country. I at one time talked to them about sending some rats to me and I would pick them up at the UofU. I can’t remember why we didn’t do it but they were willing. I think all I was looking at was a male and one pregnant female.
