Is It okay to grab your snake?

When I go to get him out, he always tries to squirm away, normally I am patient, and wait until I can get under him and just lift him out.

However, is it alright to just firmly get a hold of his body so that he grips on to me?

I try not to grab mine because even if I do, they usually grab onto something else with their tail and I'm afraid of pulling against their tails...

Usually mine are under their hides and when I take the hide up, they don't move too much. In the rare instant where I actually have to get them out (feeding times, etc) and they're squirming away I just follow them around with one hand (not too fast- you don't want to stress them out) and kind of push it toward my other hand that is on the other side of the viv, not moving.

Do this all slowly and gently...

I've personally never been very patient, so I'll usually just scoop my snake up willy-nilly. It's just a matter of carefully unwinding her from whatever she wraps the rest of her body around so you don't hurt her when you bring her out... The only thing I'd watch out for if you do decide to simply catch your snake is if it panics and decides to strike. And, of course, where its tail goes--but that should be a no-brainer, and they're usually easy enough to untangle. Just poke and prod at the lower half of the portion wrapped around.. whatever they're wrapped around, and if the tail's grip isn't too tight, just gently unwrap it. You should probably only "grab" as sort of a last resort, though... Measly makes a good point, you wouldn't want to wrench his tail! =)

Hmm, Well, mine is still a baby lol, so that's why I worry about grabbing him..he is still fragile. He never tries to wrap on things yet, so that isnt an issue.

He has never struck me either

Just swoop in gently and scoop up the snake--don't hesitate or they might spook and run away! My babies are curled up under a hide, so when I lift the hide I can swoop and scoop them.

Yes, just don't do it in public. You might offend someone. :grin01:

I find that I have my hatchlings are speedy and tend to try and "run away" instead of gripping me and hanging out the way the older guys do. So I'd say that you do have to hold them a little tighter than older snakes. Be firm-- but don't squeeze.
