tank size

ok, so my sorn is now too big for his 10g. he is between 2 and 3 feet. hes hard to measure lol. what would be the largest tank that i could get for him without stressing him out?

I think if you are willing to set aside the extra space get a big one. Your snake can probably live in a 20 gal. tank for it's whole life but in our house we over do things for our creatures.
I think if your snake can find a secure place to hide with the right temperatures, food, and water it should be "content".
I've got a big 'ol cornsnake so I found a big viv for her, she uses the entire viv. I find her in many different places, mostly in the mid-temp area but she cruises the whole thing and uses several hiding places. I have (most of the time) only one snake so it's easy for me to say "get a big one". How about "get a practically sized big one"?
When I clean the big viv I put my snake in a 20 gallon temporarily, she looks rediculously large in it (to me). I put it on it's side for more area and she still looks big for it. I've had a few Black Rat Snakes in it, one about 18" and one about 36" and it was a very nice size for them.

is there a good way to heat a large tank like cheerios with a heat lamp? there is a no heat pad rule in my house thanks to my father so i have to use heat lamps. (and i have showed him posts on here about using heating pads and how they are safe if set up correctly but he absolutely refuses. we cant even have heated blankets during the winter) i have read about puting aluminum foil under the lamp ro reduce a hotspot and to disperse the heat more. would that work in a big tank? the heat lamp works great in my 10g right now.

I never tried heating the large viv with a light but when I used a light on the small tank it covered more than enough area. I actually directed the light so that some of it was outside the viv to allow more of a gradient inside the tank.
I guess before you make the light (or lights) permanent you should try different set-ups until you're satisfied. Ideally you should keep your snake in the old viv until your new one is set up and you've sorted out the temps, if you have the space and extra equipment.

im definately going to have the new one set up first. in my 10g right now i use a red heat light for night at 50W. and i was thinking of maybe going up one bulb wattage and using the tinfoil trick to disperse the heat. ill try it and maybe that will work.

I think a 40 breeder would be a nice size. I have an adult butter in a 20 long right now and I think he looks a little cramped but he is a tad over 4.5 feet. I am working on a varient of one of the vivs in the diy section but if I needed a tank for him I would go with a 40 breeder. If you are tight on cash a 20 long would do for a while but its up to you if you want to buy something twice (an extra tank is a great reason to get another snake..LOL).

As far as not being able to use a UTH as long as the temps are ok he will be fine. If you needed to raise it for nite time I have had good luck with a ceramic heat element and a rheostat. Just set the temp you want and it will be all set and let him use the light bulb to bask during the day.

I just went through the tank size dilemma myself and settled on a 40 gallon breeder tank. My corn is only about 16" right now, but I couldn't pass on this deal and it wasn't gonna be around long. I was gonna go with a 20 long, but I'm one to spend lots of time decorating the tank to make it "perfect", to me at least. I was just imagining how much I can do with the deco in a 40 gallon. It's already been said, but as long as the temps are good and you provide lots of hides, the bigger the tank, the better IMO. Of course, it's also easy for me to say that, as I've only got the one snake(for now), so I can indulge a lil' more for this guy...

Check your local kijiji or craigslist classifieds, that's how I found mine. You could also check your local pet stores, Zilla makes a 40 gallon breeder size reptile kit that I've seen in the stores, not sure on the price, but it may be worth it...

You can also keep an eye on petco/petsmart/etc. Every now and then, they get rid of their big tanks for CHEAP!!! I got a double tank that's 5ftx2ftx2ft for $30. It divides pretty much right on the 2.5ft mark, and is definitely a nice size!

ok, so i posted a want ad on craigslist and i got two good offers... but would a 50 or 55 gallon be too huge? i mean he is in a 10g right now, it just seems like it will be way too shocking.

It souinds bigger than it really is If the price is right, I'd go ahead and get it... just plenty of hides and foliage in it for him to hide in and know that it might take you awhile to find him when it comes time to feed him

well im not afraid of not being able to find him when its time to eat. he knows the days like clockwork. i know when hes hungry when he starts watching me from the front of his tank lol. he doesnt let me forget that its feeding day. it just seems shocking to me...but i think im gonna do it! keep ur fingers crossed for me!
