i am living in ireland and at the moment its very cold here at nite,, during the day my tank temperatures are usually ok but at nite i see that they drop to around 65/70 at the hot end of the tank, is this ok?

during the day the hot end of the tank is roughly around 80/85

Not really. Do you have a heat mat? Where are you measuring the temps? I can't believe a UTH on a thermostat would vary so much.

ye i have a heat mat, before posting my question i gave the bottom of my tank some extra insulation (newspaper) and have just checked the temperature again and its back up at 80 so ill keep checking it and hope it stays that way......

my problem is that my house doesnt have great insulation and for the last week the temperatures in ireland have been well below zero...

ill keep an eye on the temps and see if they stay up

Still, I let my house temp fall to 64F in the winter, yet my UTH's maintain the temps. That's what a thermostat does. Maybe you need a slightly larger heat mat?

well i have a baby corn in a smallish tank the heat mat covers half the tank.... sorry im not good with fahrenheit as we use celsius ere
