Power Outage?

MinLynn

What blonde chick?!
This is a question that's been bugging me all day. It may be stupid but like I said, it's been a 'buggin me! I live very much in the boonies of Ohio and right now they're calling for 10 inches of snow by tomorrow. A lot of times that means power outages out here and I was wondering how you would keep your snakes warm without any type of power? I mean I could always take them over to my mother-in-law's if I had to in an emergency but is there anything that any of you have had to use in the past? I know, just me being extremely paranoid about my babies!:uhoh:

We lost power a couple years ago for about 12 hours because of an ice/snow storm.

I have a gas oven so the entire family+animals crammed into the kitchen. We turned the oven on, opened the door and it kept us all warm. It wasn't the idea temp for the snake, but it was enough to keep her from freezing.

See, everything here is run on electric and that's what's worrying me. I do have a fireplace but once you get that bad boy fired up it can get up to the mid 90's in that room so I don't know if it would smart to move them in there closer to the fireplace(big old farmhouse where the fireplace is clear on the other side of the dang house). I guess that could work in a pinch if one of us sat up all night to make sure the temps didn't get that high, huh?

Anything in a pinch. If there's more than one of you, you could take shifts to keep an eye on the temps.

My house is old too, and as soon as we lose heat we know it because the cold air seeps right in through all the crevices. It makes the tank temps drop like a stone.

I've thought about getting a generator for emergencies now that I have 3 snakes and a beardie that need to be kept warm, but I'm not sure I can justify the expense to my husband.

You could look online for chemical heating pads. How long are you planning for the power to be down? if you're talking like 6 hours these might do the trick, just stick one under your tank. If you're talking a few days, you're going to need a stove or another house.

Well you never know out here! LOL. We had a pretty bad wind storm that took out 3 trees and some major tree limbs in my yard and we were without power for 7 days! After that storm, a lot of people are worried about unstable limbs and trees and heavy snow finishing them off. If powere were only going to be out for a couple of hours I could try to hook up a space heater next to the tanks. We do have a very small generator that's able to keep our fridge and freezer running and I might be able to squeeze a space heater onto it. I'd already decided if the power goes out for more than a day then they'll go over to my mother-in-law's.

Are those something I could go out and buy or would I need to order them? I guess I'm just thinking ahead too much! I like to have things handy so I'm not out scrambling around when something goes wrong.

You can go out and pick them up at WalMart. They're like those little hand warmer pads, except they'll say "72 hour heat pack" right on the box. They SHOULD be by the sporting goods, but I don't know the layout of your store. LOL

Oh I feel sooo stupid! I know exactly what you're talking about! I'll even bet I have some out in the warehouse already. Here I'm thinkin' they're some fancy dancy snake product.

Nope!
It's amazing what ordinary household items can be turned into snake tools. I've saved pudding cups that I plan to use for baby boa water dishes come spring time. :D

Yes, my daughter has figured that out too! She's been having a blast coloring paper towel tubes and putting them into the tanks. I've already had to sneak some out.

Oh they still have quite a few! It was just getting to where you couldn't even see anything else in the tanks but tubes! Two of our snakes are "blue" right now and she was rather upset that they are using the moist hides rather than "her" hides. I told her they'll use them eventually. Voldemort won't use them because he's way too big for them but he still has one!

They're never too big for paper towel tubes. Just ask some of my snakes. :D

Maybe Voldy is just picky then. The only hide he'll use is the half log on the cool side of his tank. He won't go in the one on the warm side but he will burrow into the aspen on that side. It seems he likes to be completely hidden. When he did go into the tube for a total of maybe ten minutes, his butt was still be sticking out and he didn't seem to like that. Suprising, because he's actually the most social of the corns. He'll come right up to the glass and let you know when he wants out.

Sometimes they like their total privacy. Nothing you can do about that! :D
