if its bare wood you're supposed to bake it and low temperatures for a few hours. finished wood needs to be washed.
 
Finishes put on wood do NOT just rub off they would need to be stripped first, then soak in water for at least 20 minutes so it absorbs the water, and bake at 250-300 for 30-45 minutes to kill any bacterias, parasites, or any other foreign envaders. Please do not bake for hours or not keep an eye on it as it will start a fire. I collect sticks from outside and do the soak and bake and have never had a probem.
