rats if there are no mice?

katieam

S for Sam!
ok, so i havent been able to find anywhere near me that sells hoppers and i really need to move Sam up a size. he has been on 2 fuzzies every 5-6 days and they are no longer leaving a lump. i went to where i usually buy mice and they have none and the ones from petsmart/petco look disgusting so i really dont want to get those. i think that the place i usually go sells rats so i was thinking about switching him for a while, but would this hurt him? im worried about him refusing mice after he has had rats and/or him getting fat from eating rats.

help!!

I gave mine rats for a time when I was given (what I now know to be bad) advice from a reptile shop. The problem with rats is that they have so much fat content, and looking back, they noticeably made my snake very very sluggish indeed. I had no problem switching back though, so in my experience 'a rodent is a rodent'.

Obviously if you're going from fuzzies it will be rat pups you're thinking of getting - sadly I've no experience with swtiching back but I don't think the fat content would be quite as high so health wouldn't be as much of an issue.

I'm sure folks with a little more experience will be along soon to add to this :)

I'll be the dissenting voice here, and say that I love rats and love what they do to my snakes.
From what I have seen personally, they make the snakes that can eat them grow much more quickly, and seem much healthier.
Everyone has an opinion, and there's mine.
As for where to get them, there are lots of places locally, but I raise my own.
That way, they are just the right size for my critters.
PM sent.
