mice breeding ratio...

DragonBoy

Crazy Cornsnake Breeder
I recently purchased a customized rodent rack from freedom, and I was planning on going with a ratio of 1-4 on the mice since the trays are about the same size as the 10 gallon tanks they are presently in. However in conversation with Jeff and Lindy at freedom they mentioned the ratio they use a ratio of 1-10. That seems excessive but then again who am I to say...
I know there are/were several people here who breed mice so I thought I would throw this out there for other opinions.
Thanks
Scott

Do what you are comfortable with. If you're not comfortable with a 1-10 ratio, don't do it. I keep ASF's in a 1-5 ratio in about the floor space of a 10g.

I started at 1:3 ratio. My containers are a bit smaller. I think it is what ever you feel confortable with.

How many snakes are you feeding?

Never more than one male. Do as many females as you need babies from. :shrugs:

Be advised, they will likely pool their babies into one big lump, and one female may become particularily territorial over that lump, so if you have 20 females and one has taken charge of the whole group, you might end up losing some pinkies to starvation.

Good luck.

:wavey:

I am feeding in total about 145 snakes. However the main reason for the live mice is to keep some live on hand for a few stubborn kings and corns I have that would prefer to starve as to eat F/T. I primarily raise rats which are fed as F/T. I find that most of my snakes have grown better and much nicer once they are feeding on rats. I also have a few harems of ASF's and 3 hamsters just in case...

Wow, then I say go with a larger ratio if room allows you too. Pump them babies out. But as HHH stated watch for females hording the babies and the 1 male per. Good luck keep us up to date and PICS please...

yes do as many as you need but you also have to think that if they all have litters at the same time that will be a fair few mice alltogether before you wean them all off. I have quite a few females in one viv but upto now have been needing a lot of pinks but I am now moving up to fuzzies and hoppers so cutting down the number of females.

i can't get more then 2 litters to stay alive. if another female as a litter someone eats them. grrrrrrr i have 1:4 ratio but can only have 2 litters at a ime

I tend to use a 1.4 ratio in 10 gal. tanks. I haven't yet had any problems with one female hoarding litters yet, so I don't really have a comment on that. Like you, I keep live for a few snakes I have that will only eat live and cull the rest and freeze them according to the sizes I need. I am going to do a couple of harems at a 1.8 ratio in Rubbermaid bins quite soon as breeding season is just around the corner and I'd like to start freezing a supply of pinkies.
