Glove + Hungry King = uh-oh!

RobbiesCornField

Bring it on.
I learned a very valuable lesson today. If you have a demon kingsnake that won't let go of your wussy glove, DO NOT take it off, no matter how much they chew and chew and chew! I got my darling little demon spawn of Satan (aka Hera, a Ruby-Eyed Lavender Albino Cali King) out for some new pictures today (realized I hadn't taken any in a while).

She was fine for all of about... oh, 5 seconds. That's when this:

Turned into THIS:

At this point, I started putting her in the water to try and make her let go. Nothing. So, I pulled my hand out of the glove VERY gently. BIG mistake.

She actually started SWALLOWING the glove! (In these pictures, I'm only lifting up hard enough to hold her up. I'm not "fighting" her)

I got a chilly water bath (about 50*F), and stuck her in it to try and get her to let go. It took her about 5-7 minutes to let go.

This is how much of the glove she swallowed.

And the damage to my finger.

Hera is now under very close watch due to her extended cold water soak.

Damn, she must have a history of bitting when you prep your self with a heavy glove and a 3/4 dowel (stick). hehe

Do you handle that bitter alot or what??.

I have read (but never needed too) to wear a rubber glove 'cause they don't like the "taste" of it. but with that king I would try wearing both glove the same time.
Nothing like bitting the hand that feeds you.

Women!!:D

She normally only gets handled for tank cleaning. She developed a reputation very early on as a biter, so yes. I always prep before going in to see her. LOL
I'll definitely try the rubber glove next time, although someone had said they don't like the taste of hand sanitizer either. Both the stick, glove, and my hands were COVERED in it, and she still wanted to chomp.

LOL what a fool of a snake!

She's such a twit, but she's so pretty, I can almost forgive her.

You know what????
Years ago I had one of those fake rubber hands and now whenever I read about a "bitter" I think...I wounder if the rubber hand would do anything???

sorry just think and drink some hair of the dog here.

Very nice. I've got a desert king who started out pretty sweet but is earning a reputation as a biter now. I've got to sometimes use gloves with him, so I'll remember never to slip it off if he latches on to it now. Can't believe he tried to swallow it though, I can't imagine it tasting like any sort of food source.

Wow, Robbie! I'm glad you were able to keep your wits about you....I was freaking out just LOOKING at the glove going down her throat!!

The hand sanitizer works for me. My little king is also a demon child. So far, zero bites with hand sanitizer. Hopefully the rubber glove trick will work with your beast.

Here's a snap of my biter demon:

Except alcohol coated leather. That must taste just fantastic. LOL

Dang, Lori! That pic looks almost like the one I took when I first brought Hera home! Actually, I just realized I don't have that pic anymore... huh... where did it go?!

a VERY good combination, lol!

Exactly! I'm really hoping that he keeps it as he gets bigger. He's the calmest baby I've ever seen, though. I've seen some '08s that are snapping at anything and everything while being handled. He just sits there, looks pretty, and poses for pictures. :D

She is so pretty Robbie. I learned awhile ago animals will try to eat whatever is in their mouths thank god you got the glove without injuring her. I would have freaked out which is why I have no Kings, lol!! I am always tempted but so not ready for anything to try and eat me!!

I used to breed Burmese back in the '80s and '90s...

Although most babies were pretty snappy, I never had one over 8' (that was captive raised and handled a little) that was not pretty calm. It didn't seem to take much handling as a youngster to teach them to be calm adults. That is certainly in their favor, considering their size!

Robbie... I have three snakes that are snappy little biters-- Izzy, the '07 Cali King, Selena, the '08 Hog Island boa, and Freyja, the '08 leucy Texas rat.

Two of three become calm as widdle kittens when handled by Tara... the other tried to bite her face off. Perhaps I can mail you Tara for some gentling sessions. ;)

Thanks! I was definitely freaking out in my head, but I tried to stay calm, and very gentle. I know that if I would've started tugging, and fighting, it could've broken her teeth, and I didn't want that.

Most definitely! I can't wait until my boy gets big, although I am enjoying his small size now.

Sounds good to me! Just send her down for the Daytona show. :D
While she's down here, would you like me to send you Tony to organize/decorate your herp room?
