Sierra Sunrise

Woke up to a beautiful, crisp, cold, and clear morning, so, naturally, I grabbed a camera and tripod, and headed out for a couple quick sunrise shots of the Eastern Sierras.

These were all long exposures, between 3 and 6 seconds at f/22. EXIF data is posted at my blog...InterruptedThoughtProcess.WordPress.com, for anyone interested.

I hate waking up early in the morning. Especially when it’s freezing cold. But I really like these long-exposures…I think it was worth it.

As always, comments, criticisms, and questions are always welcome!

Such beautiful scenery. I would love to wake up to a view like that every day.
I especially love the first pic with the hint of the old barn on the right. I think it might look even better pulled back a little with more of it showing.
Reminds me of a shot my dad took in Colorado years ago. Wish I could get it on the computer to show you.

Great pictures!! I especially like the first one with the wooden barn in the corner!! Beautiful!

Gah! Everytime you post landscape pictures, it makes me wanna call the trailer moving people, and drag my happy butt out there.

How much would it cost to move a trailer cross country?

I actually shot these from the side of the highway, using a 150mm lens. If I was pulled back anymore...you would see the bratty kids getting ready for school in the house next door, the ugly driveway with all sorts of trash, and the cranky old lady walking around in her bathrobe.

The scene looks peaceful...but only because I zoomed in. In the "thick" of it...there is a LOT of VERY distracting stuff happening all around me. Zooming in was the only way to crop out all the distractions...

You are SO fortunate to be able to wake up to such beauty every day. And we are very fortunate that you are willing to share that beauty with us.
Thanks Chris!

Don't move...come visit. You and Tony are more than welcome anytime you wanna come out this way. Wait until a little later in the summer, I'll take you guys herping, fishing, climbing...all kinds of fun stuff to do out here. Just come for a visit...

I'd love to come for a visit! It's just a matter of getting the money together. LOL.

I wanna come for a visit too....LOL!!

I might be heading back out to Phoenix later this year. If I do, maybe I can swing out your way as well. Would love to check it all out with someone who knows the area.

Absolutely!! I was sorry I missed you last time. Plan on a couple days, and we can go herpin', too! I know you're VERY handy with a camera, so I'll take you to a few of my "favorite scenes"...I'll trade you location and opportunity, for tips and advice...Deal?

Sounds like a plan - although I fear by the time I get out there I may miss prime herpin' season. I have a feeling it might not be until Oct or possibly even Nov that I am able to make it out there.

Thanks for the descriptive behind the scene imagery. I was about to contact my real state agent.

Amazing pictures and I agree that the 1st pic is the best one.

Quick question about photography... what would happen if a bird flew in the scene during the long exposures? Would it show like a line?

Possibly. Depends on the speed of the bird. If it's moving that fast, it may not register. Of course...it could also register as a blur. Anything that goes through the "scene" while the shutter is opened, is, technically, there, on the image sensor. But if it isn't there for long enough, it may not be exposed.

A bird actually flew through the scene with the tree, right after I pressed the shutter release. It's not there, because I have my shutter on a 2 second delay when using a tripod...it's cheaper than buying a remote release, and works just fine for the time being.

So...if it took less than 2 seconds for a bird to fly into and than out of the scene...I don't know that it would register on the sensor at such low-light conditions. It would be a blur, if it did, and in the sky it would be VERY easy to "clone out".

In fact...all three of these shots had some very annoying overhead power lines that I cloned out of the sky...

October *might* be OK for herping...we'd have to head south, though. Late September would be better...LOADS of baby rattlesnakes running around...

But the photography opportunities will be there. Lots of aspen trees changing color on the mountainsides...

Very interesting Chris. Thanks for the explanation.
Those pictures could easily be in someone's living room.
