Hey everyone, I have a question. Ive been looking at wood vivs and Im thinking about taking a shot at building one. I know Lowes, which is about 3 miniutes away will cut wood for you....is it possible to build a cage without having to cut anything? Ive used hand saws before....I just dont want to use anything I could actually saw my hand off with.

Im totally ignorant when it comes to tools, is there anythng besides an electric saw thats easier, maybe less dangerous to use?

Besides cutting, IM pretty sure I could handle the rest.

Look at my DIY - a viv out of a bookshelf... Believe me, the only thing I had to cut was the wood for its stand, which turn out looking like s**t because I HAD TO CUT the wood. :D

I built a viv once and figured out measurements beforehand. They can cut it for you because I would have potentially lost a finger too, lol.

you could get it all cut, except some stores wont cut certain materials. if you figure out the demensions and have it all drawn up, just figure out what you need and then all you gotta do is screw and glue.

Was it out of wood? I was searching the build it yourself threads and saw someone day plywood wasnt good because its got pine in it.

Anyone have any idea what wood is ok?

Wood is fine, pine plywood, as long as it is sealed. I built mine out of plywood and painted it white that used a water base poly on it. Just to help.
Finding a boyfriend would help.
I know you are looking for a classy looking viv..a center piece.
Tough one... any local high school to see if a this could be a shop project?

Lenny, you don't sound like you have much confidence in me LMAO

I dont know about High Schools but the guy next door is a contractor and hes always building things on the weekends in the driveway.

Im looking to bite off this guys design

I used plywood as well, but sealed it with three coats of polycrylite to avoid mold and bacterial growth mostly. I am not the handiest of chicks but the guys at home depot were awesome. I do recommend looking closely to the wood though as lowes and home depot love to sell warped wood which will split when you try and cut it. Good luck and post pics when your done- I need the inspiration to build another soon.

Yes, that what I was thinking too.
By all means talk to the guy next door. I suggest figuring out the size you are looking for, make a quick cardboard box (you should have some from the move) where you want it display the viv. Look at it for a day or so.. Then give him some pictures and size of what your thinking about. You can stain /paint it yourself. That will save on his time/money.
