I do, too, Lenny. But it's a really nice artificial burrow! It will be heavily disguised when I'm all done. Look at pics of it in the DIY section! I had to give the lizard's needs precedence over aesthetics...

Nanci,
Thats a nice cage, where did you get it?

I have a big fat pig of a Uro here. We got a few years ago from our herp society. It was badly dehydrated and under weight.
I use rabbit pellets as my substrate. He will eat the substrate as well as his food. Since its vegetable matter its all good.

Another substrate I hear that is really nice is Bird seed, mainly Millet.

It's a Showcase Cage. I got it from the manufacturer. After I got it, I read on ks.com that they suck for uros. (Although a huge uro breeder recommends it). I can see why- there is only one spot for a basking bulb, and that heat doesn't spread out throughout the viv very well. I need the far end to be 90F. Then, there are slots in the front for fluorescent tubes, but they can't light the back very well. So I am going to look for some heavy-duty Velcro to see if I can mount another fluorescent in the back. There is a slot for a UTH, but it ought to be at the opposite end from the heat lamp. I might have to figure out how to put CHE inside. Or maybe a heat panel.

I am pretty sure I am going to go with millet for the substrate, and wall off the hot area with a row of bricks, to keep the millet away. I can have a feeding area there, as well as the top of the fake burrow.

I think I will get some scrunchy vines to go around the Rubbermaid to disguise it. I'm happy with the hides in general.

Ah ha!!! I've had a 28 x 11 Ultratherm radient panel sitting around since that fiasco with the custom Jungle Plastics Habitats cages. (I got sent the wrong size, and he told me to just keep it). I think I will stick that along the back wall- it's the perfect size. How to disguise shiney alminum tape...I guess that means I need _another_ thermostat! Geez...At least the two Ultratherms I have in use now as UTHs for Maizey/Jake have been very reliable!

I find that anything designed for reptiles tends to have a ridiculous inflation... The prices are just absurd. I'd rather make my viv decorations, or find them at a Home Depot or Lowes like you did. And any substrate generally comes out of the small animal section at $10 cheaper!

The Uro cage looks great deary! Can't wait to see how it looks when there's finally a critter in it! :D

Now Lenny is REALLY going to hate it!!

I feel so much better about the temps already, though.

Interestingly, I've switched back to the 75 watt bulb, because the basking spot of brick isn't as hot as the bare black floor was. I think the 75 watt may do it. The radient heater isn't having much of an effect on the air temp. Maybe a couple degrees. It's running right around 98F-100F, unregulated. It'd be nice to put another one on each end, but they cost over $30 each!
