Update pics of Ms. Sauron

Yes, MS. Sauron. She is no longer a He. Anyway, she decided to shed for the first time with us and what a disaster! I made sure to bump her humidity up as soon as I noticed she was going into shed. Well, she wouldn't go anywhere near her moist hide so I would just give her tank a couple extra mists a couple times a day. Woke up last week to this. Gave her a few hours to see if she would start working on it on her own and nadda. Had to give her a good soaking and use a wet towel to get her eyecaps off and slowly(we're talking 2 days here!) get the rest of her body off. She was not happy with us at all! Last night she was finally happy enough to let us take some pics of her post-shed. She's up to around 200g now.

What a difference! She looks lovely in that 2nd pic I hate battling bad sheds. Sadly, thats the nature of the beast sometimes, especially where I live. Good luck with her future sheds!

Our house is so hard with humidity in the winter since we use electric heat. Now summer is a completely different story. There are days that are so humid that it's almost hard to breathe.

I have the same problem here. During the winter I'm more surprised by a good shed than a bad one, and it doesn't help that none of my snakes will use a humid hide or sit in their water dish.

Last night I had to give one corn a bath and I'll probably be doing it again in a couple of days for another who's about to go. :awcrap:

Winter we sit at about 74. Now in the summer I'm fine with no air conditioning unless it's my bedroom. My bedroom is kept at a good 57 in the summer! Needless to say the snakes that are in my bedroom right now will have to be moved before summer!

Thank you! I like to think there's nothing "normal" about her! I get complemented a lot on her gold coloring. Not bad for a petstore purchase, huh?

Oh, she looks beautiful in that second pic! And I'm sure she feels much better after you helped her get all that old skin off. Gorgeous snake!

If she continues to have that problem you could try switching the substrate to cypress bark. I used aspen but switch and my boy seems to do better with cypress. Just a thought I thought would be helpful if it continues, but hopefully her next shed will be better.

Shes pretty all freshly shed I shed ball pythons at the snake shop all the time when people bring them in with bad sheds.. Its funny though all of mine shed in one piece.. I usually spill a bit of their water in their tub when its time and it works.. Although you do have to change the bedding a bit more then.

Her belly shed all in one piece. Slid right off when she got out of her bath. Her head wasn't bad at all to get off either. It just took us soooo long getting her back off. I have heard that the cypress is much better than aspen for BPs because it hold humidity much better. Maybe I'll give that a shot since it is tank cleaning week around here.

Wow, the difference is incredible!

It's never a good sign to see wrinkly skin. I think this is a clear sign that the misting is inadequte. The next time she's going into shed add a moist hide to her habitat. She will probably love it, and it will keep her hydrated!

Moist hides are very easy to make and pretty inexpensive depending on how nice you want them to look.
Cheap version: Cut a slit large enough in an empty plastic container (margarine or larger depending on her size). Keep the lid. Soak some spaghum moss (found at any pet store or online) in warm water. Once it's saturated wring it out. Place in the plastic container and seal with the lid.
Expensive version: same process, but using a container that looks natural and blends in with your viv's scheme.

The only reason for the expensive version is if you have a display viv and want to keep the moist hide in at all times. A lot of times glass aquariums completely dry out a snake's environment. BPs can't handle that as well as Corns can. The great thing about the moist hide the snake can choose when it needs to be in there, giving it more control over regulating its body.
