Stoopid Bugs!!!

Jynx

Digger, RN
So seeing Robbie's show thread pics (specifically the scorpion pic) made me trek out to the garage to dig for my black light flashlight. After all, it is starting to warm up and my obsessive nightly sweeps around the house will resume within a few weeks. During the summer, I refuse to go out without this thing. Of course, I didn't think it would be this soon...

So about a half hour ago, I grab a smoke and head out the the patio. On my way out, I spy the flashlight and think "I'll just check to see if there's anything awake yet. Probably not, but there's no harm in checking." I take one sweep to the right... nothing. One sweep to the left... BAM! Big ugly bug sitting not 5 feet from me. GAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! Now I remember why I hated myself for buying this stupid flashlight sometimes. Ignorance is truly bliss...

Don't ask why I have such an issue with scorpions; with all the creepy crawly tarantulas and camel spiders and millipedes and what not that I keep, one would think I would be incredibly tolerant of the little buggers. Its just not the case. From a distance I find myself shivering, yet there is some morbid curiosity there. Just not enough though. If you bring one near me, I will run screaming. Living where I live, I get stung at least twice a year... I'm sure that hasn't helped either.

Anywho, here's the culprit. Needless to say, I quickly extinguished the cigarette and made a break for it. For all I know, that thing could've been a rare mutant scorpion that can grow to a 10 ft long Jynx-eating monster at will. No cigarette is worth that tonight.

ok i would be checking my bed!!!! EEEK!!!

one more thing ..... I didn't know they glow under blacklight!!!
are there other bugs that glow??

Yipes! I'd have first peed, then screamed like a little girl, and maybe not in that order.

I would have taken tons of pics and then left walking veeeerrry slowly backwards. I am so glad we have no scorpions here!

LOL, Catherine!!! I didn't know they came out so early in the year!!!! Now I'll be searching too. One of these days, I just gotta get me one of those flashlights!!!!

I've only been stung once... and it was in our old laundry room. The area felt "hot" for a while but that was it. I guess it pays to NOT go around barefoot. LOL.

My dad in El Paso, TX unknowingly had one on his towel. After he showered, he grabbed the towel and started drying himself off... and apparently, it tagged his tush as it fell down. Since he had never been stung before, he went to the doctors... LOL.

On a serious note, you haven't seen any of the "bark" variety around here, have you? Those are the ones I'm worried about.

Not recommended! Haven't you ever seen those specials where they check hotel rooms with a black light...all the scary and gross stuff glows ;)

We never found any scorpions in the house, but at least once a month a sun spider would run across the living room. Those guys really freak me out!

That's good cigerette repellent there, lol.

I want a scorpion just because the glow I think it's the coolest thing but I'm deathly afraid of there stingers.

I'd come to your house and catch all the scorpions on your property, I'm actually looking for some native species:)
Do you ever see the really small yellow ones that are arboreal and live communaly?

LOL Tara... I think you may have some logic there! :grin01:

Fred, I didn't think they started coming out this early either, but apparently that nice little warm patch was enough to wake some of them up. I have seen the bark variety, but not so much around my house. They tend to stick more around the outskirts of civilizations. Of course that doesn't mean they can't be found around here... I just haven't seen any yet. The 1st time I got stung, I was about 12 and I freaked out too but now its become expected. I hate wearing shoes around the house and outside on the patio... yeah I know, my dumb fault.

Waldo, I think the small yellow arboreal ones that you are referring to are the Bark species.

Yeah, the barks are what I ment. I'd like to start a colony of them, I just need to find someone who can catch me some (hint, hint).

I'm sure Fred will be more than happy to help you with that! :sidestep:

I was over at a friend's house -- back in high school days-- awhile ago, and was freaked out by two dead scorpions. I was too frightened to even touch them, as if they exuded poison or something. Silly I know, but irrational fears are just that!

Reflecting upon it I really don't know why I was so scared of them. I guess I'm with ya Jynx!
