New to Mice Keeping. x___O;

Sacred_Nightmares

Only slightly crazy...
My friend had two 'pet' mice for about a month and a half and got tired of them, so I offered to take them since my blizzard corn is getting to a decent size and is in need of fresh food.

Well, the mice are a little too big as adults and I'm gonna have them around for a while.
As of now, I have them in a 10 gallon tank just chillin with a water dish and a cut down yogurt cup of apple bits.

Any warnings I should know about since I'm not too familiar with housing rodents?
And tips are greatly appreciated!!

-Jenn

Congrats on the pick up!!

You may want to get a water bottle. They will spill the dish. Use a good litter for them, like Aspen or Carefresh. Change that weekly because the males stink. Give them a couple houses and a wheel. Pick up some good rodent food, mix some rolled oats into it and you should be good.

Good Luck

Okay, thanks! I should be able to swing by a pet store this weekend to pick up a few of the recommended items.

I'm just hoping my snake grows faster!! These babies look mighty delicious. ;]

Do you have any specific questions I can help you with? I was just trying to give you some basics, to help keep them healthy and happy. Not you, but some people try to put so much into raising rodents and as long as you keep it simple, it stays simple.

Good luck and if you need anything, please ask!

Alrighty. I really appreciate your concern and help.
Since there are 'supposed' to be temporary 'pets' if you wish to call them, i don't plan on spending too much, but I mean, a simple hide or house and the water bottle sounds like an easy idea just to make their days a little less boring.

As far as further questions, not really. As a kid, I had a hamster so I kind of have a little experience. Just making sure I don't forget anything or something. :p

On quick question though, the mice are apparently able to jump and climb the underside of the tank lid. Would just placing a weight [ie, a textbook] on top be sufficient? lol

I definitely understand the subtle reference! They are feeders! I get that! LOL!!

Textbook should be more than enough, that what is needed. Unless you have a cat or something. I have three cats and I use the metal lids that rest on. One of my cats would if he could, but he doesn't. So a weight is a OK, if you think you need it.

Good luck and happy feeding!! :eatsmiley

Yeah, I have the same type of lid, just rests on top. Well, better safe than sorry. I don't want to have mouse presents all over my house.
Eww. lol

Thank you so much for your help!!!!

I've had mice for years as classroom pets. Some quite enjoy redecorating their homes, and I usually give them a paper towel tube when I clean their tank. They'll have fun with that until next week, when they start all over. Mine also have a wheel, which they use much more faithfully than I use my bike! Even if their primary purpose is to be snake-food, a well-exercised mouse is healthier, thus more likely to have a productive life and healthier babies.

You're quite right about them hanging off the top of the viv if it's a screen type top. I've had an enterprising mouse or two find an escape that way. A book on the top seems to take care of the problem.

Good luck!
